Hello all I need abit of advice, my chicks are due to leave there nest next week and was wondering once they leave can I take the two baby's plus mam and dad out of breeding cage and place them into a small flight, will they still carry on looking after the baby's and learn them to eat?

They should leave the nest box between 28 to 30 days and should wean between 42 to 45 days old and will not require parents after that.

Hi Unless you have to move your birds before the chicks are weaned. I would wait. Moving could cause the chicks to be deserted. Also leaving weaned young with breeding parents sometimes causes problems. But then again NOWT IS CERTAIN EXCEPT DEATH & TAXES. Yours B.J.

To be honest its better to leave all as it is until the chicks are at least 6 weeks of age. The parents will still be keen on nurturing their chicks and will make sure they are weaned properly. If they are removed to a flight straight away then the parents might think their job over and like B J says, abandon the chick feeding. Also removing chicks to a flight will cause them to burn off their weight. At the stage the parents stop feeding them, they lose weight anyway, so its rather important that they are not flying around burning off what little fat they have left during the last 2 weeks of weaning

hi carl,if you dont want your birds to breed again take the nest box out or block it of,but like others have mentioned try and leave the chicks and the parents in the cage they was hatched in. when they are 6 weeks old they should be feeding by them selfs, when they are around 6 weeks old and you are sure that they are feeding by them selfs then you can move the chicks into another cage so that they have time to put weight on as nat has said,if you do move them and the parents do abandon them then you will have alot of problems on your hands like feeding them yourself or even chicks that have starved to death, have patiance
