I've established that Munchy will come out of his cage for millet, which is fine except I'm trying to save it as a treat, and his mirror. We put a rope perch outside of his cage with his toys next to it to try to get him out. He'll come out onto it but he won't stay on it for very long unless his mirror is there and he can see his reflection (I've got it covered with paper at the moment). He then climbs up the inside of the cage and tries to play with the toys from there and generally seems pretty happy clambering around inside the cage. I guess outside must be really boring unless he has a reflection there but I can't do stuff like hanging things from the wall and ceiling, not that he'd be likely to notice.
Also, when we do manage to get him out and I lure him onto my arm with some millet eventually he will fly off and do about four laps of the room before either landing on the top of his cage or on my shoulder if I'm standing up. (I was surprised when he landed on his cage and I stood up and he flew up to my shoulder) I notice when he's next to my ear that he's panting quite a lot when he lands, although only for about half a minute at the most depending on how much he's been flying. Flying seems tiring, so I'm not really worried about that but I wanted to make sure that it was actually normal and that he's not having breathing problems.

Hi cage birds don't get much exercise & have a tendency to be a trifle overweight. Wouldn't you pant if you had run the equivalent of his fly round? Don't worry he's OK. Yours B.J.
