Avian Poisons PTFE or Polytetrafiuoroethylene, Teflon, Silverstone
At temperatures of 280 degrees centigrade or over these products used in oven liners, non stick cookware, hair dryers, iron board covers will cause lung damage and sudden death to our budgerigars. In less severe dosages the birds will be in respiratory distress and depression.

Smoke Smoke from any source is hazardous. Second hand smoke from cigars and cigarettes can cause chronic eye, skin and respiratory disease. Install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms near your budgerigars. Tobacco is also toxic, so remove any whole or smoked cigars or cigarettes before allowing your bird access to a room.

Disinfectants
These include Bleach, chlorine dioxide, disinfectant sprays, ammonium compounds and wood tar distillates The fumes from all of these agents are potentially toxic. If used in the bird room follow label instructions and ensure adequate ventilation. Or be safe and Use an avian disinfectant like F10SC

Petroleum solvents
Petroleum solvents can be found in paint strippers, thinners, oil based paints, carpet and upholstery protectors, glues, and furniture Repeat exposures can cause liver, kidney and brain damage.

Vitamin A
Toxicity is usually the result of dietary over supplementation. Clinical effects: Poor feathering, dry skin, irritability, "bulging" eyes.

Air Fresheners Air fresheners, carpet fresheners, perfumed candles contain essential (volatile) oils which are mixtures of terpenes, esters, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones and phenols. These can be absorbed by inhalation, through the skin and by ingestion.
This can affect the birds central nervous system stimulation leading to seizures or depression resulting in depression, ataxia; respiratory distress, oral irritation and vomiting.

Zinc toxicosis The signs of zinc toxicosis are often non-specific and identification of the problem requires a zinc testing.
It is well known that galvanized coatings on welding wire contains enough zinc to cause disease, cages and wire mesh should be cleaned with a wire brush and washed down with vinegar .

Incense
Incense contains: charcoal, starch, clay, aromatic chemicals and essential oils. The essential oils have the potential for causing toxicity in birds in the same way as the essential oils in scented candles, air fresheners and carpet fresheners. It is not recommended that you burn incense in an area where birds are exposed to the fumes.
