I am proud to say that my son has been asked to deliver a speech at the dawn service on ANZAC day here in Cairns.
ANZAC day in Aus is bigger than Rememberance (or Armistice) Day, but focusing on not only WW1 but all fallen servicemen and women; and the dawn service is the biggest service of all. Unfortunately "dawn" isn't really dawn but 4.30am (yikes), and guess who will be getting him there???
He is a great speech writer, and a great public speaker, so I can't wait to hear what he comes up with.
PS Note to BB, in particular: ANZAC - Australian and New Zealand Army Corps
Basically the landing on Gallipoli peninsula in Turkey in 1915 by Aus and NZ troops as a decoy for the landing further up the coast by the British troops. The Brits knew Turkish toops had the high ground and it was a slaughter with many men killed before they even reached shore. But the beginning of the term "ANZAC spirit" was born with the ANZACs not giving up and landing and digging in regardless. Long, long story short, we celebrate this day every year - Lest We Forget
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
I get goosebumps always with this verse, and the "Last Post"
One of the really touching things that has come out of all this is the landing cove in Turkey was renamed "Anzac Cove" by Turkish government in 1985, and the services held on the cliff-top above the cove are now attended by thousands from both sides together. Many Aus schools do school trip for their seniors to Gallipoli for the ANZAC services. So a really big deal here in Australia.
