Ok i went to a bird acution on Sunday , there were lots of budgies there , we got there early so we could look round properly , anyway i saw 5 pairs that i really liked , all looked big fit healthy birds no outward signs of any problems atall .
I bid on all 5 pairs and got them all , brought them home and caged them up in the pairs they came in .
I noticed on Mnday night that they seemed to be scratching and yesterday they looked quite irritated and a couple are a bit fluffed up so my first thoughts were they have come with mites so i have ivomeced them all .
This morning a couple still looked fluffed up and they are still scratching but then if they have been bitten they are going to do so for a few days until the irritation has stopped im presuming .
Is there anything else i can do or need to do for them .

Could you post photos of the birds for us to see? People might have more advice then

you need to spot them all with ivermectin 0.1% and keep them isolated from any other birds

Thought you might say that Barrie It does seem to be the general advice that you don't really know what you're picking up at a bird auction..

Well they are the only birds ive got out there at the moment and they are all from breeders who must be members of the Budgerigar Society as they all have Budgerigar Society rings on , also they are exhibition type birds and a couple with the very big head feather thing going on
I have treated them all with ivomectin on the back of their necks , cant take any pics at the mo cos the camera isnt working .

Often birds end up at an auction for a reason Grimcoll , my advice is always buyer beware and if possible buy from a breeders birdroom , that way you get to see the parents and the housing conditions

The thing is these birds were put in the acution by a budgerigar society registered breeder so how can you be sure that if you go directly to a breeders shed that you arnt going to come away with birds with mite problems Well hopefully now i have treated them with the ivomec it will clear the problem , they are in Moncaster all wire cages so no place for the mites to hide so the cages can be scrubbed clean aswell .

how can you be sure that if you go directly to a breeders shed that you arnt going to come away with birds with mite problems Firstly, you will know by looking at his setup and the condition of the bird room and birds. Secondly, you will know the breeder and can go back to him in case of a problem.

While I do agree that a bird auction is not the best place to buy any type of bird I bought two budgies from an auction two years ago and they have had no health problems. (with the exception of a tumour but that is a very recent thing) It is up to you if you wish to try and return the budgies but if I remember correctly auctions sell birds on a sold as seen basis and you might not be able to return them. If you do end up keeping them then you need to continue with the treatment of the Ivermectin and see how they get on. If it is mites and you get rid of them then who knows you might have some great budgies If you are looking for more budgies in the future then there could be a breeder on here that could point you in the right direction

Hi Grimcoll. I expect you already know that auctions sell on behalf of a 3rd party. Sold as seen. No returns or complaints entertained. Buyer beware. Yours B,J. PS Next time take someone more experienced or at least talk to as many other buyers at the auction before the sale. as you can.
