That's what we got, a five minute lesson on how to feed them and we were sent on our way. I went back to the store and talked to the manager and told him that from what I know now it should have been obvious to the person who gave us the lesson and a quick health check of the birds that PoPo had damaged feathers even before we brought her home and either the staff member was totally unqualified or sold us a sick bird knowingly. Like I said, there are some issues with pet shops in Tokyo.

Just an update on what's been going on in their world Woke up this morning to find them happily sharing their swing that I made them which was a first. I think they get along well but then again it's not like I know anything. PoPo has most of her feathers back and really seems to be enjoying flying around the apartment. Every day she has a little more confidence. I'm still worried about the way the tail feathers are coming in, they don't seem as straight as they should be but we are prepared for the worst, which would be her losing them again and repeating the cycle of not being able to fly then new ones growing in. We've seen what we think is the worst of it and we can deal with it. I love her round eyes but not nuts about the way the vitamin dyes her face and nostrils. The vet told me to use up the bottle we have which at this pace will take at least another month and I don't think the color will fade, think we'll have to wait till it's all over and done with and then for new feathers till we see her true beauty. We just joke that she has her lipstick on. PJ is doing very good indeed. Sometimes he likes to fly gracefully and other times he flies like a rocket with more energy than is needed it seems but I think he is just showing off. He flies inbetween us and under the table and does loops around the room at top speed. I think he is beginning to talk but it's hard to say. He does a great job mimicing the little click click sound I make with my tongue to get his attention and sometimes says something that sounds like his name but we'll have to wait and see. I took a pic of their cere so hopefully somebody can give is a definitive answer on his sex, we're assuming that he is a male but I'm really bad at seeing the difference.

I've said it once, and I'll say it again. They are gorgeous!
Pop that first photo up in another question thread about sex. You'll get some decent answers there. I don't trust myself sexing budgies.

Really enjoying reading your blog with pics Robert. Its clear you and your wife love your birds and get great enjoyment from them as they thrive under your care. This is what forums like these are all about - sharing the joy, experiences and learning from each other and their birds. Looking forward to more pics and tales of PJ & PoPos' experiences ps - I also agree they are both VERY cute !

Right? The other day when I gave her the vitamin drops she flew away and landed on my white bed cover and procedded to sneeze it all over the spread staining it.

They are 2 months old about now. The last few days I noticed that PoPo's new feathers were looking odd as to the angle they were growing in, just like before and her flying was getting weaker after doing so well. This morning she lost a flight feather and the quill was malformed like before so I think this pretty much tells us that it's French molt We were prepared for this but it's still heartbreaking. She had a few good weeks of flying and at least to me she seemed happier, more friendly as well. When she started to lose them the first time she lost most of her flight and tail feathers within 5 days once it started. I guess our next hope is that she might recover at their first real moult which is supposed to happen around 3 months old but if that doesn't happen I guess we can expect this to happen again and again. I'm split on whether to get a 3rd bird or not. Would PJ be a happier bird if he had a perfectly flying buddy and if he did would they ignore PoPo? The cage is obviously too small for 3 so I'd have to get a bigger one soon but since they are so young I think now would be the time to act. Advice please. Edit: I also think it's a good idea to stop the vitamin drops because PoPo doesn't like them and struggles and if her feathers are weak to begin with I think the chances of them beign damaged when she struggles is not worth the risk. We add vitamins to their soft food as well. The vet took a look at her when her feathers were growing back in a few weeks ago and told me to just finish the bottle off but it's another 2 month supply at 2 drops a day.

In my opinion, I don't think you need to get another bird, if you are only doing so for PJ. PJ will find that PoPo is company, whether flying or not.
With the vits, can you get enough into her via her food or water?

We give them soft food like sprouts daily that are dipped in vitamin water so I hope it's enough.

I went to a pet store closer to home and even though they are smaller and have a very poor selection of goods, their staff seems to be more professional and knowledgeable about birds. We were there last week picking up some millet and the wife went goo-goo over a blue pied they have there so I had a ton of questions to ask the woman.
After seeing pics of PJ and PoPo she says it's still too early to tell their sex but she's leaning towards them both being female. If that's the case I don't want to risk getting another bird with the risk of 3 females but it was very tempting. The wife has been talking about a 3rd for weeks actually but I think it's too early, I want to wait to their first real moult and see if PoPo improves and if we make a decision to get a 3rd I think it's wise to wait till spring for the healthiest choice and to know their sex before we add another.

Good scheme, Robert. No rush.
You'll see in your sex question, I suspect they are both female. Might explain the nipping too.

They have so many places to perch in the apartment and they make their rounds with the sun. For the moment their favorite perch in the evening is this one. Just a piece of some hard wood I bought and attached to it a laundry clip so I can move it around to any door frame. In this pic you can see PoPo's feathers (in the back) havn't grown in right but we hope she'll get a little better each time she grows new ones.
