Hi I am Richard26 and have a budgie under training. Have just got him to fly across the room for food but he is very nervous. He was bought for me by my daughters when my dog died. Not as request by me and came as a surprise. I am 81 and did not want to start a relationship with another dog. I would like to get another new baby budgie to start from scratch and have more fun with. what do you think ? I have a smaller cage for this purpose. The one I use now is a large Italian Marchioro.

Hi Richard.... and a very big welcome to you ....and your budgie...it would be harder to train if you had 2 budgies as they tend to bond with each other...rather than people...id stick to 1 at least for now until he/ she has been trained....please post budgie pics when you can and cage pics ..... regards mick...

Hi Richard and welcome. Hope you enjoy having a budgie in the house, but they can live as long as a dog. People tend to not realise that. I agree with Mick - stick to one for the time being. One is much easier to concentrate on than two, and the one will concentrate more on you without the other. You may get different advice, but most of us prefer one budgie in training at a time. Plus it can become very time-consuming training two, if the two decide to ignore you and focus only on each other. Does your budgie have a name? Would love to see photos of him when you can.

Hi Richard. You're a grand age. Good to have you here. I'm sorry about the loss of your dog. I hope your new budgie also becomes a great companion for you. They are wonderful little things if you put the time into building trust with them.

Hi Richard. Hello & Welcome. You will find that I appear to to be the only one on this forum who prefers to tame birds in numbers higher than one. I'm no bird whisperer but I have been training birds for more years than I care to remember. If you want to get another bird & provided yours is a cock you should have no problems cage wise. You can easily tame/train them together as one. Click on the link below & take a look. budgerigarsforum.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=budgietaming&action=display&thread=2506(Hope the link works) Yours B.J.

How many years, BJ? You have never actually said. With all that experience I am sure you find it all too easy, but as Richard is a beginner budgie owner and still learning about about the birds, I feel it would be wrong to encourage the acquisition of another budgie when the first is still a work in progress.
Richard, it is of course ultimately your choice whether you go buy a second budgie and if so, then you may not be aware that the new bird will have to quarantined away from your current budgie for a month, to be sure it isn't carrying any infectious diseases, which could end up fatal to your current budgie.
