Hello Everyone! My name is Michelle and I have 2 budgies, a green male named Picasso and a blue m/f? named Prada. I have had Picasso for about a year now and have only had Prada for the last 2/3 months. Here's a picture of them enjoying eachothers company in their cage. and heres a picture of their actual cage. Their cage stays open almost all day and they are both getting 10-12 hours of imitation sunlight a day on a timer since my apartment is too dark. I have had some issues with getting them adjusted to proper food, they are I hate to say, seed junkies because they refuse to eat vegetables etc and it has always been like this, they also do not like fruit, SO I have been giving them a multivitamin supplement sprinkled onto their food daily. I also bought Zupreems Avian Entrees Garden Goodness.... www.amazon.com/ZuPreem-Entrees-Premium-Garden-Goodness/dp/B0009YWM1W <<<this exact one, in hopes that they would eat something than these darned seeds! They do not like it because the pellets are too large so I have been grinding it into their seen mix which I think is better. If anyone has any suggestions for me, that would be great. Since all seed diets are bad we are just feeding a generic diet by Hartz but supplementing it with the vitamins. These birdies are driving me nuts! Anyways, looking forward to being on the forum!

Welcome Michelle, Picasso and Prada! I must say your cage is the most unusual I have seen so far. It's quite low down, are the budgies okay with this?

Hi Michelle and Welcome to forum Picasso and Prada are very beautiful budgies. Prada is Female Sky Blue. Your cage setup and play gym are very beautiful. It looks like a compact zoo cage. The budgies must be enjoying it as they are out mostly. I like the idea of artificial sunlight. But budgies need sunlight for Vitamin D3, which can be supplied in diet. Liquid calcium for birds with vitamin D3 for 7 days every month in their drinking water would be enough. In this case normal room light would be enough. It's a common misconception in some parts of the world (especially USA and Canada) that seeds are bad for budgies. Barrie has been keeping and breeding budgies for more than 50 years now and he never used any pellets. An all seed diet is not bad. But the seed mix should be good quality, fresh and varied. Occasional millet spray should be provided as well. They should also get fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs. But if the budgies don’t eat anything other than seeds, supplements in drinking water will cover it. Go through these threads. It will help you with budgie food. Questions are always welcomed here Food and Supplement for My Little Budgie FiendInteresting things that I feed the budgies

Thank you all for the welcome! Marianne, The budgies do not mind the height of the cage at all, they love perching on the artificial branches and climbing top to bottom. Also when we got Prada we added in a bunch of jungle themed toys Including a nest and some bigger parrot toys which they also love. Budgies buddy, how can you tell that Prada is a female? I know Pic is a male because his cere is a saturated blue but I thought Prada (hence the unisex name ) was too young to be sexed and that the colour of her cere would be more pronounced as she grew older and we were able to tell. Thank you for the compliments on the cage as well, I had the idea one day and just made it, I love restoring things into unusual other things (sounds kind of off I know :/) so the cage itself only cost me about 100$ altogether. I also extended my rabbits hutch using an old frame from a painting we had and then I got creative with chicken wire.

Thanks this forum is awesome. When I first got Picasso, I joined the Budgie Talk forum, only to be logged in and it saying, "You have been banned from the forum for: Reason Unknown..... The ban will be lifted: Never" BEFORE even typing my first thread or commenting on anyone else's thread so I thought ah I would really like to have a budgie forum on my list... I'm currently part of a rabbit forum for my rabbit Peter Cartier Rabbit and 2 ferret forums for my ferret Pandora

Breeders can sex the budgie chicks at very young age by presence or absence of white on the cere. Young hens have whitish ceres. Check THIS page for budgie age and cere color according to sex.

Oh Okay well I suppose thats good because we were aiming for a male/female combo. Now I'm curious as to why their sexual behaviours are the same. They both bob their heads and get pin type eyes at eachother, I thought females had a different behaviour?
I'm just so curious because I think they've been stressed out lately, perhaps since spring is coming they are just molting from that but I thought it could've been due to the fact that they could both be males and aren't getting along as well?

Some of my hens do more head bobbing than males so that's not a sign Prada is too young. She will be sexually mature at 6 to 8 month age. And it is then she will have brown cere.
