I am new to this forum and have been reading up on budgie health issues. I came across several Ivermectin discussions, thank you for keeping us all informed. I have been breeding budgies for several years now, and have had minimal to no issues with mites yet. I do think though I need to take your suggestions seriously and start regularly treating my birds, although catching them all (6-7 breeding pairs) in our 2 large aviaries will be a job and a half. I know Ivermectin from larger farm animals at a higher potency. I have not come across the 0.1% in petshops in New Zealand, perhaps because I did not ask or perhaps because it's not readily available here. I tried to google it for NZ and nothing much came up. I have 3 questions: If I cannot buy the 0.1% it will be hardly any effort to get the higher potency ivermactin, I presume at 1%. I could dilute this, does anyone have any experience with this? Would you suggest diluting this with water? I also wonder whether ivermactin treats both mites and worms. I've been using Anthel three-in-one bird wormer in their drinking water, but a couple of birds are refusing to drink this and I have to leave it longer than recommended when it does not rain (hard to plan!) to make sure they drink their medicine. Reminds me of Mary Poppins! My last question: I also have chinese button quails and diamond doves in the same aviaries. Do they require treating as well? Thank you so much!

Hi and welcome to forum I will post a link to a thread which will answer your first question. Anyhow it's not a good idea to use Ivermectin which is intended for larger animals. Yes Ivermectin works on both mites and worms, inside and outside the body. You don't need to use anything for worms if you are using Ivermectin. I have no experience with that. But all birds are carriers and you should treat them as well.

Nev is from New Zealand and a very experienced breeder. I am sure he will guide you to get Ivermectin in New Zealand.

Thank you so much. I have spoken with Nev some years ago at a similar forum, he may remember me. It will be nice to get in contact again.

Hi Marleen and welcome. I remember asking that same question of Barrie a long time ago as another member didn't know where to get .1% Ivermectin either but had access to a higher strength. His reply was that according to the manufacturers, it couldn't be diluted with water as it didn't dissolve or disperse properly. The original solution wasn't water-based, which is what you would need to be able to dilute in water. That was the gist of the problem, anyway. I may have that a bit wrong, but do remember the answer being "no". Hope that helps, and yeah, I am sure Nev will be able to set you straight.

I've send a PM to Nev for a chat. If all else fails I can order from UK, or pick some up when I'm in the Netherlands in a few months time. If it is sold in the Netherlands that is..... Nev may have an easier local solution Thanks for your help. This forum really helps when in a relatively isolated area. Not many people around to chat with about my hobby, and the people in the petshops are kind but generally know less than I do.

I think that is the case for most of us. I am not a breeder, just a pet keeper, but by keeping active on the forum, I find I have learnt a lot from others' problems and solutions. It is hard for us in Australia to import a great number of animal supplements, Guardian Angel being one of them. For some reason these are targetted as not allowed, and especially powders. Hope you have better luck.

That may be another bridge to cross, as like Australia NZ has many restrictions on importing goods. Now that you mention it, buying medicine in the Netherlands and bringing it across the border may cause all sorts of problems with biosecurity! Sigh. I'll wait for Nev and his wisdom, and go from there.

Ivermecin for birds is available in NZ through a vet. When I first tried to get some I had to explain what I wanted to the vet and he looked it up and mixed it for me. It doesn't cost much. Now it is widely used so most vets should know how to mix it. I think it is mixed with Poly Propalate or (propalene?)
I always treat my birds with ivermec when I put them in the breeding cage just as a precaution

Thanks Nev for your local knowledge, this will keep me out of trouble with customs!
I once had a bird whose feet curled up and he lost the ability to fly. He survived for another couple of years by climbing up the netting using his beak. He was old but otherwise in good health. The other birds in the aviary were not affected; could this have been mite related?
