Help! Does anyone have any ideas as to how to stop budgies chewing the newspaper that lines the bottom of their cage. First one budgie started to do it and then another decided to try it and it's now making such a mess...they seem to get such a kick out of it. They're not eating it, just ripping it in to tiny pieces and throwing it out of the cage. They have plenty of toys to play with and fresh veg to eat and play with but the newspaper is just too tempting. Any ideas greatly appreciated. Thanks x

Take it away for a few days. That is all I am able to suggest. I have a hen who randomly tries this on. Take away the temptation for a few days, put it back, try again and if they start again, leave it out for that many more days.

Hello, Don't use newspaper the ink could upset their tummies. Next time your in your local Chippie. Ask for 50p worth of wrapping paper, explain what you need it for & if your lucky like me you will get plenty. far more than the cost of the newspapers. Don't worry about them tearing it up it's a good game. Kids & budgies choose their own favourite toys & there not always the thing we like them to play with. Sand may be OK if you don't mind the mess. I suggest you look at the Taming & Training posts this will keep you & your birds occupied. Happy birds = happy owner. OK.. Yours B.J.

The ink "upsetting their tummies" is an old wives tale, Bj. If that were the case, budgies the world over would be getting around with "upset tummies".
50 to 100 years ago that may have been the case, not so now.
H2O, provide bark and plenty of it for your bird to chew. Much safer than trying to convert your birds from chewing paper.

The ink used in newspapers is not toxic to budgies, it is completely safe. Why not make them some paper toys that they can destroy instead of the newspaper ;D Do you know how to make a paper spring? I used to make them all the time when I was a kid. Just clip it to the bars of the cage with a plastic peg and taa -daaa instant toy Plus easy to replace.

Hello. None toxic does not mean suitable as part of a calorie
controlled diet. Anything chewed sucked or ingested to excess
has the potential to cause anything from a mild tummy upset
to death from an allergic reaction. As advisers, We have no
way of knowing how much ink is being absorbed, or paper
swallowed by this bird. So erring on the side of caution. I
offered my opinion.
Queries about tummy upsets are the questions most
asked on this & many other bird sites.
Some of you may remember a Mr B. Who in 1974 died
of Vitamin A poisoning. Due to an excess of Carrot juice.

No-one mentioned feeding their budgies newspaper as part of their diet! "They're not eating it, just ripping it in to tiny pieces and throwing it out of the cage." were the words used by their owner. I am not a big fan of allowing budgies to chew paper or paper toys. I am much happier to see them shredding bark and making a mess with that. I worry about a bird who may not just ball it up (the paper) but manage to swallow some. It is the physical aspect of the paper in their crop that I have a problem with.
