I am getting a budgie for our family from a friend who has a large flight aviary with a flock of roughly 60 budgies. We want to get a budgie from the nest box so taming is easier since all his other birds are used to have a large flight area, but our friend has never taken one from the parents but rather let the parents wean and train them to eat. Right now the baby that we have picked out is roughly 2 weeks old and starting to get it's feathers (and still with the parents in the nest box). At what age is it safe to take the baby budgie from his parents without having to make "baby food" and hand feed? I have read so much about handfeeding and how it can go wrong that I don't want to risk the life of our new family member. I have grown up with budgies, finches, cockatiels, and a Macaw so I'm not totally new to caring for birds. I have never had the opportunity to have such a young bird and want to do the right thing.
