Just picked up our new budgie today. As I posted here, our 11 year old budgie (Tweetie) died on Wednesday. Anyway our new one sits on the perch and hasnt moved for the past hour. Plenty of food and water in the dish. I seem to recall that when we got Tweetie 11 years ago, we were told to leave him alone for a while to let him get aclimated to new surroundings. Is this correct? He is very quiet.

Sorry to hear about Tweetie. Congratulations on your new budgie.
After relocation, the budgies take from 2 days to 2 weeks to settle in their new cage and home. It is perfectly fine to be quite or eating less. He is just stressed.
Have you taken any pictures yet?

Keep an eye on him, move slowly around his cage and talk softly to him so it's not like you are creeping up on him or "stalking" him in his mind. He doesn't know yet that he isn't in danger from you, so you have to promote his trust. I use a quiet radio and frequent short visits to the cage for the first day or so. He will soon know that your presence is nothing to fear. As soon as he looks curiously at you is when I'd start trying to encourage him to interact with you in return and praise everything good he does, even if its just taking a step nearer to you while you are near the cage. I hope this helps for starters.

Tried to feed him millet seeds and he ate it but doesn't seem to be drinking water. My has a very quiet voice and she visits often.

I'm sorry to hear about Tweety, it's so sad when we lose our little friends. But it's good you managed to get other budgie within a few days. It's perfectly normal for them to be very quiet and not do much in the first week or two. It's also usual for them not to drink when you are around so don't worry if you don't see him do that. The others have given good advice so keep up with what you are doing and he'll learn to trust you. Then I guarantee he'll make plenty of noise! :-)

He is probably doing more behind your back, the best way to check whether he is eating well is to monitor his poops! I'm sure it won't be too long before he settles down, it varies so much from bird to bird so patience is needed on your part for a while, but persevere.... Even if it doesn't seem to be going anywhere much every good experience he has with you is a baby step in the right direction. Please keep us updated with his progress!

Update: Our new Budgie (Brady) seems to be doing okay. He is eating and I found seeds in the water so he must be drinking. My wife took him out of the cage today and I told her that it is probalbly too soon for that. We were thinking about adding a few toys soon.
