Last week I noticed that the nostril seemed to be getting smaller and now it's clogged. Any home remedies for something like this?

It looks like scaly face mites.
Use Ivermectin Spot-On Drops 0.1% on the back of the neck.

I took a q-tip dipped in warm water and tried to clean the notstil and it opened up a little so I think it's snot. Because of the PBFD we've decided to visit the vet anyway.

Tell us how you go at the vet. It does look a bit like scaly, but given PoPo's condition, it could be something else I guess.
Scaly mites need to be introduced into the environment, by other birds, toys or something in contact with other birds somehow I think.

Hope it's nothing serious at the vet.

Well I sure am glad that we went. Turned out that it was an abscess. We got antibiotics and an appointment for 2 weeks later. He used a little suction tool and something that looked like a water pick to clear her all out and check out the puss under a microscope.
Very lucky to have access to an avian specialist here, not that many in Japan, but it's a 2 hour round trip by car and a hundred bucks. Feel sorry when ever I read a thread where somebody doesn't have enough money for a vet.

So it was localized collection of pus accompanied by inflammation. Did the vet say what has caused this?

No guesses on what caused it.

If you need repeat and ongoing care, it's just beyond the means of many people. It's worse when you see others unable to access an experienced and capable avian vet, then getting inadequate or next to useless care and no results for their money. At least I know I'm going to get an accurate diagnosis, the right meds, and someone who understands that my bird is not "just a budgie".

So glad you have gotten PoPo seen to, Robert. Good wishes with the AB's and checkup in the weeks ahead. Hoping PoPo is back to normal in no time.

It's worse when you see others unable to access an experienced and capable avian vet, then getting inadequate or next to useless care and no results for their money. The other day I actually called the first vet I went to, the one who told me the blood test would likely kill PoPo and gave me vitamin drops which did nothing. Second time I went back another vet at the same place suggested a CT scan. So I called him up and explained that I was a new bird owner and it was only after my bird got worse and I went to a specialist did I realize how inadaquate his knowledge and care was, bordering on professional negligence. If he had any love of animals he should erase "small birds" from his sign. He sounded like he was about to cry so I left it at that. The guy I go to now is famous here in Japan. While we were waiting he was getting calls from all over Japan, has a few books out and such.
