Just wondering what the concensus is on the id tag braclet that comes with most Budgies. My vet told me once that they can be an irritant to the budgie. She said it can be removed but there is risk of the removal tool causing injury.

Just me, but I don't like them. I don't even like the look of that little ring around their leg - makes me think of a convict! ;D I think the remove/leave on debate is probably about 50/50. The ring can get caught on things and cause terrible leg injuries, but then the removal of the ring can cause an injury too (although I would have expected better from a vet!)

I have not seen a budgie irritated by a ring. They have it since 7 days old so it doesn't bother them normally, unless otherwise

Hi Over the past 40 odd yrs, breeding /ringing budgies I only ever had one bird sustain an injury to his leg necessitating the ring removal. Our Vet got out his ring cutting snips & said in all his years of practice he had never used them to remove a leg ring from a small bird. He cut off the ring & handed me back a dead budgie. Probably died of shock he said. I still got a bill for the ring removal. Leg ring problems are not a regular occurrence & should you lose a bird you have a greater chance of it being returned. Yours B.J.

I still got a bill for the ring removal. I would have not paid that bill at all.

I found one hanging on a piece of loose twilweld wire , ones not bad considering i have bred over 7,000 budgerigars.........................without a ring we could tell you all our birds are less than one year old where as they could be old age pensioners.......................i do hope your cats and dogs do not have collars on

Personally, I believe that unless the ring is bothering the budgie or the leg has swollen then I won't bother to remove it. As Barrie said they help you to tell the age of the bird and sometimes where it has come from

Not plastic. Is there an easy, non risky way of removing this? She seems to chew at it every so often when out of the cage. I haven't bothered about it until now but thought I would ask.
