Hi all,im based in manchester,uk and on thursday found a young budgie on my window ledge. My 10yr old son went outside and little "Roger" jumped on his head and Asa(son)brought him inside.I think he is young as he has stripes on his head down to his beak,my son is adamant we keep him if noone claims him but im not sure as we have 3 kids and a labrador.Ive never had a pet bird so havent a clue if hes well or not,at first he seemed very tame,he sat on our heads and let us stroke him,now hes totally different. He is eating and drinking but seems scared, any advice on how to care for him would be great, thanks for reading, emma

Hi Emma. Good on Asa for rescuing budgie Roger. Have you tried your local stores, put up posters etc to try to find his owners? If you have no luck in getting him back to his home, you need a cage with food and water containers, a good quality seed, cuttlebone for calcium and natural branch perches. Don't be fooled into buying sandpaper for the bottom of the cage or to wrap around the perches - waste of money, and very bad for budgies' feet. A few toys are always good, but he probably won't play with them until he is feeling settled and secure. To start with he was probably happy to have found a haven and have a rest. Now the initial panic has gone, he is still trying to decide whether he can trust you or not. Place his cage somewhere there is a fair amount of activity, although with three children that shouldn't be hard to do! ;D Noise tells them everything is okay; silence means predators are around and danger is lurking, so the noise will help him feel relaxed. Seed pots and water need to be placed so that Roger sitting on a perch anywhere isn't going to poop into them. Water needs to be changed every day and seed needs to have the husks blown off and topped up every day. A cover to put over him at night can give extra security too, and help him settle down for sleeping if the cage is kept in the lounge or similar. Stripes all the way down his forehead is a baby, yes, so quite young and probably escaped his aviary by mistake. It could be worth finding budgie videos on youtube and playing them to him and watching his reaction. Have a read through the stickies on this forum to give you some ideas - there is so much more I could go into but the basics need to be addressed first, if you cannot find where he came from. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

safe perches can be from lilac, hawthorn, blackthorn, sycamore, hazel, apple tree's, willow's etc etc(don't just take a branch from any random tree because obviously not all are safe and never take dead wood, for insects and because you don't know what tree it could be from). Make sure to give them a good scrub with a decent disinfectant - dettol would do and then give them a good rinse to get the dettol of. Free perches and much better and natural for them too. Always take leaves of though, and let them chew a few twigs, it keeps them entertained for a while. I think the likely-hood is he has escaped from a breeders aviary and probably wont be claimed, if he isn't i personally think you should keep him, you might manage to get him to talk, if you can get him tame he will be a very great addition to your family. You should can find a fairly low price cage online, this one would suffice www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/birds/bird_cages_and_accessories/canary_cages/cages/261925. Would you be able to post a picture of him/her??. You might be better of (if you can) to take him for a quick vet check, just to make sure he's ok after being out in the wild. the vet might also be able to help locate it's owner and if you don't wish to keep it ,he should be able to help re home it. But try your best to get a avian certified, because to be honest most regular vets only know about cats and dogs, and haven't a clue when it comes to anything else. You can ask the reception if the vets their do avian or not they should can provide a straight forward answer.
