my daughter went in the aviery to feed her birds and found one of the new mother hens dead, this hen was alive this mornimg and looks as though she was eating at the time. the thing that bothers us more is that she still has chicks in the nesting box that are too young to leave yet. do you think that the cock bird will feed them. if not what should we do? also any suggestions of why she would die as i have one very distressed child.

Yes the cock will feed them. Don't remove him or the chicks from the breeding cage.
If not, then it depends on the age of the chicks. How old are they? Do you have another pair with similar age chicks?

i agree with BB...100%...BUT... its not un comon for a hen feeding chicks to give them all she eats .....so in fact she could have starved her self of food giving it all to the chicks ....or ma be the cock wasn't feeding her ....or it was simply a heart attack..... this is also common in breeding hens ....well common with budgies in general.......
