Is it possible for a hen to get eggbound if she doesn't mate in time?

The timing of the mating won't have any effect on egg binding.
In most cases egg binding is caused by a shortage of calcium

There are quite a few reasons for egg binding and lack of calcium is only one of them.
Some birds are just prone to egg binding.
Bird's age is also relevant to egg binding.
Trauma or infection to the bird's reproductive system can also cause egg binding.
A bird which does not get enough exercise, fat or unfit bird can also become egg bound. Because the muscles will not be strong enough to expel the egg.
Some environmental factors like hypothermia can also be the cause of egg binding. Its a condition in which the body temperature is much lower than normal.

yeh she laid in the concave in the nest box I assume that the nest box was provided to pair for breeding. Than why are you thinking of removing the egg?

Than why are you thinking of removing the egg? because I thought it was infertile, i'll calm down now I think. i'm so pleased she's laid - i didn't want her getting stressed by not being able to get the egg out. Can the hen tell if the egg is infertile?

Can the hen tell if the egg is infertile? The hen can tell when the egg is going to hatch. Are you providing her with calcium?
