I am hand feeding two budgie chicks. { the ftaher did not finish the job and the younger one was kicked out of the nest} I have been hand feeding them for about two weeks or so. Lately I have noticed the older one having a clear discharge coming out of it's cere sometimes. Yesterday, i noticed the younger one having the same. I called the vet and she gave me some SMZ TMP do give them two times daily. The younger one still begs for food and acts very active. The older does not act as active. He is now snorting some so I know he is congested. Other then giving the meds, keeping them warm is there anything else you can think of? Should I have the humididty up some in the hospital cage or do they not need this? Thanks in advance Valerie

I have no words of wisdom, Valerie, but I wish you luck in helping the poor little chicks. Hope they regain their strength soon.

I feel a steam bath couldn't hurt them. Are you able to take the cage into your steamed-up bathroom? If you are able to increase the humidity in the cage too, then good. I presume the vet didn't have any other tips for you?
Poor chickies. No one likes having a cold. I hope they are okay.

this happens when hand rearing as the birds are over storing food the liquid in this food comes back out of the cere , in a way this is good as it could also go down their windpipes ..............feed less per session and do make sure they are swallowing

But Barrie, this is clear not food colored liguid. The older one is really sounding snotty. I did see clear bubbles coming out of his nose to.
I will feed less in the future as this may bring this on but I am thinking it may be more then food coming up thru the nose now. I would love to hear your opinion.

I let the crop empty out fully each night which they do. The crops are pretty much empty before the next feeding. I am not feeding any water just the formula and it tends to be on the thick side. [Med to thick} I can listen to the older one's breathing and it sounds real snotty. He sounds like a kids with a runny nose that needs to be blown. When I feed him I feed him 1/2 cc to one 1cc each time and then I give him a break as he seems to need it to breath before going on to finish the feeding.
