And Sarah also mentioned London in her thread about the Olympics. We went up yesterday to take my Granddaughter to see The Wizard of Oz at the Palladium, for a birthday treat, it was amazing and we all loved it. I'm glad we did it yesterday though and didn't wait any longer because the streets were heaving, Ive never seen so many tour buses up there either, quite something to see if you don't mind the crowds i cant imagine what it will be like in another week.

Aww sorry Marianne, i need a built in GPS in your neck of the woods i don't know how you all find your way around, im glad my girls are savvy with it. Its strange because when i was 16 my mate and i used to come up on the train most Saturdays to have a mooch in Harvey Nick's, Harrods and Selfridges, we never had much money but thought we were the bee's knee's. especially when we sat and had a cuppa and a cake in Selfridges ;D. We always managed to find our way round then, must have just been young. brave and very lucky .

Is it really overtaking the city, Marianne? I can imagine the increase in population would be phenomenal.

When the Olympics were held in Sydney, everyone thought it was going to be chaotic - traffic, people, disruption, hard to get to work. All the talk beforehand was of going on holiday to get away from all the palaver and stress of it.
In fact, it was just the opposite. Everyone suddenly became super friendly, the public transport increased and everyone made an effort to leave their cars at home, freeing up the traffic big time. It was like a big family friendly city-wide picnic.
Seeing all the athletes from all over the world wandering around in their sweat suits with their country names stamped across the back was quite a thrill. It's not often you see the Uzbekistan basketball team walking through your city suburbs. You'd spot the US swimmers one day, then the Romanian weightlifters the next.
The athletes are really impressive in the flesh too. They do seem quite god-like with their incredible sporting physiques. They are rather other-worldly close up. (Especially to a tiny dot like me)

You'll all have to do the anti-rain dance together. I'll try and send some sun your way. Is July usually rainy there? I know when I watch Wimbledon on the telly, they are forever pulling the covers on and off the courts, but that's earlier on in summer isn't it.

Yes', the weather has been unusually bad this year, but we used to get summers and winters I remember quite distinctly when I was younger , now it's like autumn all year! I have heard rumours that due to a change of something or other in the gulf stream(?) it may pick up next week. Perfect timing for the Olympics and school holidays. The nearest Olympic event to me is the sailing events at Weymouth.

In fact, it was just the opposite. Everyone suddenly became super friendly, the public transport increased and everyone made an effort to leave their cars at home, freeing up the traffic big time. It was like a big family friendly city-wide picnic. We've had a lot of the same with people saying they'll go away for the games but apparently the air lines say that's not really happened. Public transport is going to be an issue especially on the tube in rush hour, in places it's already at capacity and they say 1 million more people will use it a day with 3 million already using it. Us commuters having been mentally preparing for the Olympics for a long time and expecting the worse. However, the tourists trying to catch a southbound northern line train from kings cross at 8:45 will really struggle. Thankfully I catch an 'overground train' (though it goes underground for most of my journey) which are less busy. I imagine some people that normally use the tube will take my train instead. I'm looking forward to the whole circus of it, I've got tickets for the Semi Final men's basketball 4 rows from the floor - now all I need is for it to be the USA game and I'll be made up As for the super friendly, I really like helping people out. Annoyingly a large percentage of people don't thank me for waking them on the bus/offering directions/pointing out their bag is open - hopefully I'll have more luck with the tourists

I find that too, Matt. A couple of things really made me think when we were in Brisbane a couple of weeks ago, and it is nowhere like the size of London. Just a whole different culture in a different city.
