Last year i bred 2 birds, who produced my best chicks,so this year i paired some of these chicks ! I have since discovered that some of these chicks have reared babies with french moult. My question is can french moult miss a generation and should i eradicte all related birds from my breeding program, obviously this will be really disappointing because this line was starting to produce some decent birds and having produced such good chicks i have kept quite a few of them! Can it be that the unaffected chicks will be ok or will they be carrying the virus which will manifest itself further down the line ?

Hi naldy, i too had three chick's from parents that showed no sign of french moult and one turned out to be a sufferer. I def would not breed from this bird as the chances are it will be passed on and i didn't breed the parents again so i think it can skip a generation. I would dearly love to get a new female to go with one of the non affected brothers but i don't want to risk this being passed on through him even though he does not suffer from it himself. Hope this helps.

Not good news ,i was hoping someone would come on here and say i could breed the non affected chicks, but i knew in my heart that was probably not to be the case, thanks for the reply tho skysmum,if anyone else has a different opinion on things,id be grateful to hear it.

I would'nt use the affected bird/s to breed with, but there is no reason not to use the unaffected birds,i have had the occasional french moulter in a nest over the years,it's brothers and sisters have produced well for me.
