Hi Everyone,
Thanks for taking a moment to read my post!
I have 2 budgies - Clover (10 years old) and Orchid (9months old). I purchased Orchid from a Pets store in the spring as a companion for Clover who had lost his cage mate at the age of 12.
I kept her quarantined for a month and then introduced her into the cage and all went really well and they bonded right away.
The one thing that has always kind of concerned me about Orchid is that she does not play with any toys or chew on things, but I figured she was content enough with Clover and wasn't bored so she didn't need the toys.
I noticed her beak was getting long so last weekend I took her to my vet(who specializes in exotics such as bird and reptiles) for what I thought would be a beak trim. Turns out she has mites, so he treated her by injecting investicide (I think that's what it was called) and told me to go home and get Clover because both would need to be treated. Done and done, no problem.
I also went home and sterilized their cage and got all new toys - got rid of the wood stuff, got new wood toys and perches etc.
Things seemed to be going well, Clover totally fine, but Orchid suddenly started doing a lot of wing flapping as it looked like she was having trouble staying on her perch. She was still eating and climbing the bars so I decided to keep the room quiet and just watch her. She falls asleep and begins to tip off the perch and catches herself and sits back up. When she does really fall asleep it is as if she almost laying on the perch instead of sitting upright.
Went to bed and this morning found her on the bottom of the cage with her millet eating away but still doing a lot of wing flapping and falling asleep mid snack where she kinda just tips forward and sleeps for a few and then she back up and eating away.
Since I had to go to work, I was afraid of her falling off the perches and hurting her self while I was away for the day, so I have placed her in a tank with a lid. The bottom is lined with paper towel and there is a baby blanket in the corner as a soft nest for her. She also has food water and millet, which she was eating away at. Still lots of wing flapping and sudden sleeping and tipping forward. I watched her eat millet and seed and have some water before I left the house, but this morning I noticed her vent was quite dirty - which I know is a bad sign and her poop which had been normal is now quite green. So I cleaned her up and placed her back in the tank and she was doing her sudden sleep fit again in the blanket nest as I left. The eating and drinking should be a good sign tho, am I right?
I would say things aren't looking too good for my little girl but am hoping for a miracle. But just trying to keep her safe and warm.
I spoke to a friend that has birds who thinks that the mite treatment might just be kicking her butt since her blood and immunity might have been down a bit due to the mites. Almost like when we take antibiotics and are made sleepy for awhile while our body fights whatever is going on.
Any other thoughts?
Thanks so much!
