Hi there, We have had our budgie for 3 years now and recently his cere has changed from bright blue to a wierd mix of blue and brown. Check out the photo! I used to have a female budgie so I know the differences in temperement between males and females - this budgie definitely has more male characteristics than female, but the cere colour has me concerned. The reason I am concerned is that we recently took on a second budgie who is definitely male, and as they are now sharing a cage I don't really want to wake up to a clutch of eggs! Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Attachments:

Do you have a photo of his cere before it turned brown?

Hello Agree about the Vet. Re your worry about eggs. They are laid one every other day. If you do ever get any unwanted eggs, just remove them. No problem.....B.J.

Yes. That's a clearly a male in the second photo, must be some kind of problem making his cere go brown.

Good link Mick Avian vet visit looks a must now as it says that a brown cere on a cock budgie is a sign of a bird with a kidney disease or testicular cancer. Don't waste your time or money on a general vet.

It can be a hormonal imbalance, rather than cancer, but the vet is the one who can answer that.

Thanks again for the replies guys. Will be making a vets appointment first thing in the morning.
There has been absolutely no change in his demeanour or behaviour since the colour started to change, still a happy little budgie, so hopefully whatever is causing it, it's not too far advanced.
Can anyone recommend an avian vet in the north east uk?
I have seen FirstVets in Newcastle listed on the Parrot Society website as an avian vet, so I will be giving them a call to see what their knowledge is like, but I would really appreciate any recommendations.
Thanks.

Since he is showing no signs of illness, I hope it's just hormonal imbalance as Hezz said.

Thanks. I'm in Australia so can't help directly on vet recos, but... There's an external list here www.parrotmag.com/vets?catid=21and on the forum here budgerigarsforum.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=budgiehealth&action=display&thread=252

Since he is showing no signs of illness, I hope it's just hormonal imbalance as Hezz said. Having said that, though, BB, Bluey's changed a long time out from his abdo tumour becoming noticable. And even after the growth was obvious, he was well for months after. Rach, I sincerely hope your little bird has a simple hormone imbalance. Good luck with your vet visit.
