Hey there...My budgie is having some health problems today...
The symptoms include runny poop, inability to stand or use his right leg for climbing in the cage(extraordinary difficulty getting around) and a slightly twitchy wing on the right side. He seems to be standing fairly well on his stick, save for putting all his weight on his left leg, slightly tilted in that direction.
Up until four hours ago he was having fun with his mate, running around and being lively, so I have no idea what could have happened. The days before he also showed no signs of illness or weakness.
He is 7 years old, I've ruled out a physical injury almost certainly, as there was someone in the room at all times. He doesn't show signs of increased drowsiness, nor does he sleep at this time. In the 3 hours I've been observing him, he's had a few minutes during which he attempted to sleep, somewhat lethargically turning his head and burrying his beak in his wing.
Can anyone here, with reasonable amount of experience, or even a professional place those symptoms with any particular disease? And recommend a course of action?
There are no aviary vets specialized in parrots, particularly budgies at all in my city (a big problem on it's own) so I'm just scrambling on what could be done...
I've been raising budgies for years now, and I'm quite alarmed as budgies in the past have shown stiff legs like this before they died...

Possible a small seisure / stroke cerebral apoplexy /, provide heat, isolation and remove the perches.
Place seed and water at floor level
The runny droppings will be down to stress related to the condition
The cause is normally due to the age of the bird and affects older birds, a blood clot reaches the brain and depending on the severity a cure is possible
a homeopathic drug called "Cerebrum " plus an injection of vitamin B followed by vitamin B in the water will in cases cure the bird.......this all depends on the severity of brain damage caused.......good luck

Thanks....any recommendation for means of inserting vitamin B in the water? If there was a vet I could take him to for an injection, I would have. Also, his chirping is shallow, high pitched and continuous, like a whistle. It started a few minutes ago..he's still standing fairly stable on his left leg.
I guess I might have to prepare for the worst....

Its a difficult one as we don;t know the extent of the damage the cerebral apoplexy has caused to his brain, he must have isolation , warmth and a quiet area of the room.
The immediate action can only be applied through an avian vet and at this age i would be suprised if he make it.
Nothing much i can say except good luck

Thanks guys...I'm watching him closely - there's not much I can find to do for him - but I'm making sure he's comfortable and stays warm.
This morning I noticed a very thin strip of white, pasty mucus on his lower eyelids, that's all but gone by now - maybe it's a good sign. He actually makes efforts to get around his cage, struggling to climb up where the top perch used to be..doing his best, dragging his right leg, using his wings and beak. I haven't tried covering the cage with anything, and there's not much I can do to get him to stay in one place...leads me to believe he's not getting very weak yet. Though he does get tired after putting his weight on his left leg all the time.
He also went to eat today, some seeds and a hard boiled egg I made for him. He's been eating seeds all day, small quantities but somewhat frequently.
He chipped away at both the white yolk and the shell, though not like he used to when he was healthy, last week. Hydration was also not a problem, as far as I can tell. He went and took a drink a couple of times today, actually bigger quantities than I've averagely seen him take.
His poop is very runny though, as the day went by, it got worse, even excreting clear liquid with a whitish pasty white center, at some point - maybe that's why he's drinking more, to make up.
I'm really hoping he can recover, despite past experiences..for now, I try to keep him fed and watered and make sure he gets rest and quiet. Just wish I could do more for him...been scouting for vets today, but there seem to be only 2-3 general animal practitioners here, unsure of medication and dosing for small birds.
Man, I've always tried to keep my budgies on a varied diet, feeding him a full pallette of vitamins and minerals, and I always check what breeders are talking about...but apart from that, the thing that's killin me is that I can't find a vet to give them a check up from time to time..and in times like this, I'm utterly helpless...

Also, I've been thinking if specific types of diluted tea might help his diarhea symptoms...Given the state of his right leg, someone suggested it might be a small seizure or a stroke. Any ideas? I've been reading about tea as a method of treatment for a long time, but I always held back in cases that weren't an emergency, as it was recommended to discuss tea administration with a vet. According to this source www.birds-online.de/nahrung/krankenfutter/tees_en.htm chamomile might be a good herb at this point. It also defines the dosing, but, has anyone had any first hand experience? My budgie is of average weight and build, so diluting tea with water might help him. Maybe above average dilution would reduce risks of adverse effects? I'm carefully holding back from this measure, just asking.

I'm carefully holding back from this measure, just asking. I can't help with your specific problem, but... On my avian vet's instruction, I regularly give my bird camomile tea instead of water two times a week. This is after my bird had crop and digestive system infections, and after he had been on meds specifically targeted at those infections. The tea must be camomile only - not a blend, so you need to check the pack. I have tea bags, making up a normal cup, then adding a little extra water. After filling his little water bowl, I keep the remainder in the fridge to refresh the bowl a couple of times during the day to keep all clean. In my case, the vet said the camomile works to protect against certain infections (I think staph from memory, maybe others) and help with inflammation.

So, my dad jut got back, bought some camomile tea packets for my budgie. I've read the label: "Rich camomile: delicate camomile flowers are the basis of the natural complex of Greenfield Rich Camomile herbal tea. Sweet apple notes complete natural flower flavour while cinnamon adds pleasant spicy zest to the mild flavour of Greenfield Rich Camomile. This herbal tea does not contain caffeine and has effective relaxing effect. Allow to infuse 5-7 minutes, net weight 1,5g. www.greenfieldtea.co.uk" I was looking into cinnamon, whether it's safe for budgies..search engines mostly just stall out and mention cinnamon budgies, but I did come across cinnamon sticks as treats for budgies, so in low doses, I assume it's alright. I was thinking of a 40% tea 60% water mix with those ingredients. Any thoughts?

You need pure camomile tea. Not a blend.
