I'm so sorry to hear about your loss especially under such terrible circumstances. Like the others I feel sure you will want another budgie when you have had time to mourn Perry properly but do give yourself a bit of time. It's worth waiting to get exactly the budgie you want too so maybe keep in touch with the breeder and wait until he has a male for you? Rest in peace beautiful Perry!

Thanks all, I am feeling a bit better today. The breeder has been in touch after I told him of my tragic story. He has a light green cinnamon cock that has just left the nest, it will be ready in about a week or so. It is the last breeding he is doing this year so I am going to take it as a sign that I was meant to have it. He is going to let me know when I can collect him. I won't ever be able to replace perry, I miss him so much but hopefully I can pour all my emotions into this new bird. Just got to think of a name for the little guy.

hi helenmatt, it's not daft at all. I know exactly how you feel. Last october we bought a lineolated parakeet or linnie. He/she was very tame, loving and affectionate. Loved to be scratched, cuddled and held. Well this year in February my five year old sister who was four at the time killed her. That day my sister let her out and she was pooing everywhere. My mum was mad at her for pooing all over the place and her exact words were "I hate that bird." Anyway she called me downstairs because my sister had got hold of her perch and, honest to god, I don't know what she was doing but she was hitting the bird. She was always reslly rough to this bird, she used to hold her really tight and treat her like she was a toy aeroplane (literally) but still that little linnie was very gentle and hardly ever bit. Anyway, I was trying to prise the perch off her but then she hit the parakeet in the head and (here's where it gets a bit graphic), she arched her little wings up, and she had blood seeping out of her nostril. So I took her upstairs to calm her down, just held her and petted her, and even though she was dying in my hand, she still managed to turn her head round for a stroke. I took her downstairs and she tried to fly but ended up falling pathetically to the floor. So we put her in kitchen towel in her snuggle hut so she could die in peace. Mum still recounts how Kawaii(that was the birds name) looked out at her. She didn't really hate that bird at all, but I bet she regrets saying that now. I still cry about Kawaii. A couple of days after Kawaii died, we bought a mealy parrot for £150 and he was a big bird (one of the largest amazons) he was bigger than an african grey. I think mum was so upset about Kawaii that she bought him on impulse, but he was lovely. He didn't let you touch him, but he would eat from your hand. He hadn't been handled at all and the people that the previous owners had got him from just kept him in a tiny cage, it was the same size cage we had Kawaii in (Kawaii was about the size of a budgie)and never let him out, apparently. So we bought a larger cage. But he had a lovely personality, and seemed very intelligent. We used to copy him and each time he would make it more complicated. Once he bit my mums' arm when she put her arm out to him, so she ignored him for the rest of the day, so he climbed down the cage and sort of leaned out to her and she said "come on" and he flew to her. Like he was sorry and wanted forgiveness. Anyway, (you know where this is going)the owners before fed him chocolate cake and crisps, and two or three weeks after we got him, mum found him dead in his cage. After that we bought a senegal that we have now and for my birthday I got a yellow pied budgie. And then THAT flew away. So I got a new one, the one that I have now. So I know exactly how you feel. I think that you should get another. Don't think of it as a replacement for Perry. Think of it as a different budgie, with a different personality. He wouldn't want you to give up on birds. He's probably up in heaven, flying around with lots of other budgies, having the time of his life. Probably with Kawaii and Frank the amazon. And he's waiting for you. All of our birds are waiting for us, because we are their flock, and birds of a feather flock together.

Gosh wingz that story made me go cold, how awful! I have an update for you all, I have a new feathered friend, he arrived on Saturday after collecting him from the breeder, he was born on the 8th June (8 weeks) and he is a pale green cock. He is still very timid but is coming round slowly, I have called him Pickle. Thank you all for your kind words over the last week or so. I will never forget little Perry of course but hopefully Pickle and I will be just fine.

He is such a sweetie Just because you loved Perry doesn't mean you can't love another bird. Because you'll never forget Perry and what a wonderful bird he was, but slowly, over time, you WILL star to move on, you WILL start to remember him not from his tragic death, but from the happy moments you shared. You will look back at those memories and smile knowing that he is in peace, and that you cared deeply for him. You'll never really get over it. But you will start to feel better about it. x
