I took a trip to the local pet shop today because I like to shop local etc It's the only store in my town and the man is so rude ! I asked him what metal was used for the budgie toys he said who cares they r just birds also his answer to his budgie seed mix was ! "it's seed love " no wonder ppl get stuff off the Internet. I aske him y was he bein so rude as I do buy my pet stuff from him so am a regular costumer he said " I buy stuff from whole sale then sell to u its not hard " I continued to ask him that he clearly ha to have some animal knowledge owning a pet store with animals in it he repeated the same sentence ! Just shows u u clearly don't have I have a brain or care to sell animals or products ! That poor budgie is still there in a small wooden book from weeks ago and has been mixed with a couple of finches ! Poor thing was going to get the breeders info of it ring and let them know were there birds have ended up !

people like that shouldn't be working there if you ask me. Most pet stores don't have a clue about their animals and just keep them in cramped cages with poor diets and even with other species like lovebirds or parrotlets that will bully them! Some don't even tell the species apart. Aside from that, if there are loads of budgies sitting in the same cage and one falls ill, they will most likely all fall ill, and a lot of pet store birds die earlier.

So sad. Do pet stores need special licenses to sell animals? If not, maybe they should.

They do have laws and licences to provide there basic needs but that poor budgie I have spoke about in other posts is still there no wih finches no toys and in a wooden travel style cage lights on it all day. At one point I was going I smuggle him away but that just fuels tw pet shop to get more and gives them more money. Poor thing was trying to rest with noises lil birds around him :-( as for the toys I brought a ball with a bell on got it home took it out the packet it was rusty in the inside of the bell in the bin it went ! Total pants. The owner gives out wrong advise even to me about dogs trying to push there budget things makes me mad He even had mice and hamsters in there travel pots clearly from the wholesale place he got then from . They r like Chinese takeaway boxes with holes in. I went in there in he morning and they were still on them when I returned to pic up dog food in the afternoon. I am taking my business else were !!!

Good for you, Liz. By taking your business elsewere, you are chipping away at what motivates him most... money. I would do the same thing. Problem is, I am running out of places to shop!

Ring up your local council environment office they check out and issue the licences to keep pets. I did this to a local shop about 18 months ago . They had reptiles and birds kept in filthy conditions the bird cages were always filthy and the either didnt have any water or the water was green and full of poo , the floor of the cages had months or maybe even years of poo and feathers . The council sent someone out and I got a call back telling me they had issued them with a warning and told them to make improvements .. a couple of weeks later things were still the same so I rang the council back up .. next thing I notice there are no pets in the shop and a fortnight ago they had sold up to another pet shop owner. So it did work to report them and thats the only way to stop these pet shops operating and not caring for the animals in the proper way

Very encouraging, Moonkira. It does pay off to notify authorities and then follow-up. Good job!

This is awful so many small pet shops seem to be the same. I shop at pets at home for this reason over priced but at least they have certain standards they have to adhere to. Poor little budgie

Pets at home have a terrible reputation for thier reptiles I am a member of Reptile forum uk and there is no end of complaints about how they keep thier reps . There is one branch I have seen for myself the wrong set ups they keep thier leapord gecko`s in and they always ill and dying . Pets at home staff only do 3 days of training then they think they know it all , but as you know you cant learn much in 3 days

I don't think our laws are tough enough on places that sell pets. It's so sad. I don't like going in pet shops anymore because I'm hardly ever happy with the way they keep their animals, especially birds.
