Message for Mickmay - on one of your chats you said 'make sure it's 'soluble grit'. Being a newbie (and still waiting for budgies) could you explain please. Can you get different types of grit then?

Oyster shell grit is a soluble grit. That is the one that most people, including me use.

Thanks Marianne. I knew that oyster shell was best for budgies, but wasn't aware it was classed as 'soluble'. We learn something new every day!! Thanks again.

Some grits have grit in that is just that and it can't be broken down by the birds digestion it will just sit there and sooner or later cause them problems. Oyster grit is just that and will break down not compact it the birds gut.

Most good pet shops will sell oyster grit and yes it is marked as such. I bought some yesterday and it was only £1.00 for quite a large bag. I did go to a seed supplier, but my local pet shop sells it as well and the same price.

Just check that it is Oyster grit and doesn't contain oyster grit with other unspecified grit! I buy mine in a tub and it is called "crushed oyster shell". I think happypet make it, but look around there are usually good prices on the net if your local shop don't sell it.
