Hi all I went in the avairy this morning and found one of my home-bred female budgies, Georgia, fluffed up and sleeping on a perch, while the others were all being active I hoped that she might have just been cold and would be alright in the afternoon. When I got back from netball, I went and checked on her and found her in the log looking sick, fluffed up again and sleeping She was fine yesterday Does anyone know what might be wrong with her? Is there any chance that she will be able to make herself better again? Or is it one of those things that they will eventually die from? She is very special to me because she is 1 of the 2 surviving chicks that I bred. Please help!!! Nicola

Isolate her in a warm hospital cage for the meantime, in case what she has is contagious. Plus you can then check her poop as well for any other clues and observe her better.
Have you got an emergency energy supplements? Like Quick Gel that you can give her?

Thanks Hezz I can't check her poop as she is in an aviary with 7 other birds. It wouldbe impossible to tell which ones are hers! I don't have energy supplememnts sadly. Is there anything else I could do? Nicola

Is there anything else I could do? Nicola I meant to separate her from the others in a small cage so you can check her properly, poop and all. Have you got a spare small cage, or a hospital cage? Use a heat lamp to keep her warm or get a normal desk lamp and put a 40 watt pearl bulb in it. Put the lamp outside the cage next to the "fluffed up" bird. Leave the light on all night and day.Cover three sides and roof of the cage with a towel or blanket to keep the heat in. You could also use an electric oil heater with a thermostat to give off slow heat. Also, replace the bird's water with warm sweet weak black tea. You can also use warmed up non-fizzy electrolyte drink such as Gatorade or Powerade. If the bird isn't drinking, drop a little into its mouth every 1-2 hours. It's likely the bird is cold and its blood glucose is down. Do this until someone can advise you what might be wrong.

Stace is right. Keeping her warm will help her a lot until something is diagnosed. Hope she gets better soon.

When I checked her this morning she was a little bit more active but then she just stopped, fluffed herself up again and wouldn't move. So I gave her some weak black tea (I didn't put sugar in it. Do I have to?) How often can I give it to her? I gave her some after breakfast and I was hoping to give her some after lunch and dinner. Would this be alright?

You don't have to put sugar.
Budgies use a lot of energy to keep them warm when they are sick . This energy would be used for recovery from illness if they are kept warm. That's why they sometimes get well by just keeping them warm.

Phew. That's good news. I reckon it's a good idea to get yourself a hospital cage all organised and ready to go, so you can separate any aviary birds with problems in the future.
I'm sure Barrie has info on all that on his website.

Good girl, Georgia! Don't scare your poor mom like that. Glad she is feeling better.
