3 hours are too long. Which Windows version and processor are you using? You must have an antivirus program installed. BitDefender is the best in my view.

I have Norton antivirus. I think it might be a hardware glitch. It happened before about a month ago but only took 2 hours to sort that time. Just updated Norton as much of that was wiped out? I have Vista and it just wouldn't even start up even to open in safe mode. Just a blank black screen with the cursor. Had to run the battery flat to get it to go into Systems Restore and then charge it to a minimum to get it to run restore. Did it 3 times before it worked. Any ideas what caused it?

What was it doing that took all that time to load? Could be a virus screwing windows and norton up - but then you just did a restore, so I guess not. It could be a dodgy hard drive. Theres a whole bunch of tools out there that'll scan your hard drive for problems - cant recommend any from experience but this one sounds ok from their website hddscan.com/ this guy goes into some depth about it www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic28744.htmlHave you noticed your laptop making any odd noises recently? I've seen hard drive contents corrupt once from dodgy memory but thats pretty unlikely

It is well known that Norton antivirus will make any PC slow. Ones PC is slow it will take time for the files to execute and it can cause many problems in the PC, especially with AMD processors. The only antivirus which hardly makes any difference to PC speed is BitDefender. Don't count on on windows "system restore". "System restore" does not work 50% of the time. And it is also controlled by antivirus programs. Most of the times access to some files which are required by "system restore" is not allowed by antivirus programs. Always make a restore disc (DVD) and use it to restore your system. A nice clean restore.

Thanks for your replies everyone. Sorry I didn't reply back sooner. I've only just sussed out how to find threads/posts I'd done and was relying on my bad memory! I still have no clue as to what caused it, but thankfully its been ok since the problem
