Many years ago we rescued from the local paper two budgies from a couple that were divorcing and neither wanted the budgies..one male, one female...both deceased now . Anyway the female passed away from old age and the male was put to sleep because he got something that not even the vet knew what it was but now I've found this forum I am hoping someone will be able to tell me what he had. He wasn't an old bird and we had him for a few years before his toes started to rot and drop off...he was in so much pain that no treatment the vet gave him helped and we felt it was better to put him to sleep rather than see him suffer...each toe would literally just rot and drop off...he use to cry out with pain...could he have had gout? Any info greatly appreciated as this is something that has been with me since he died and it would be a help to find out what he had and if there is a treatment for it now that could have saved him... Thanks x

Hi H20, have personally never heard of this sort of thing but doesn't mean to say it is uncommon as birds experience all sorts of things to do with the feet/toes (especially because of the nerve endings etc).
I am sorry I am unable to answer your query but rest assured some experienced forum member might be able to give a prognosis very soon.
Sorry to had to experience this too x

to me it kinda sounds like lack of blood suply to them, had it befor in a mouse who had a tail injury, blood stopped going to the tail tip and it went all black and dropped off.

Still a mystery then I just hope it was a rare condition as I'd hate to go through it again or for anyone else to have a budgie like it. Thanks x

Just a thought...do budgies ever get auto immune disease where the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys healthy body tissue? The budgie was pure white, not sure if that played a part in his problem or not.
