I asked in the budgie gender thread if Alfie and Sunny were female because I saw baby budgies same size as them in pet shop today and the male had the blue cere already where as my 2 did not So I had my suspicions that they were female which has been confirmed by a member. Now I am concerned about them being caged together because the blue one can be the dominant one and they have had little disputes where the blue one chases the yellow one , but then they will be best friends again in no time and are inseparable, but I am now concerned about them as they grow and reach maturity how will they be together ? And now I have had to change thier names so Alfie is now called Skye and Sonny is now called Saffy I am disapointed they are both female because I was told they were probably male . But I have grown to love them so just hoping they will be ok together so whats peoples advice on keeping 2 hens ?

As I posted on your other thread, they will be fine, if you haven't had major disputes by now. Adding a male isn't really going to change things except maybe make things worse! But no-one can say for sure what the result will be of getting another male/female/ two more ....... anything! We can predict, but really it comes down to the individual personalities of the birds involved. Especially where they are indoors pets and not in an aviary. An aviary allows for more space between "warring factions" , and usually contain more birds, therefore if one grouping doesn't work, no harm done, the birds will find another it can get on with. Plus, don't depend on the size of the birds for age. From photos posted up by members in the UK, there seems to be a lot of budgies with some or a lot of exhibition bird in them. These are generally a much bigger bird than our regular pet type budgie.

Can't agree more Hezz Julie - females are just as much fun to have, no doubt all birds bicker at some stage but if they are together from the start then they are used to each other so am sure that they get on together well!

Thank you for the advice .....I really dont want to put a male in but asked incase it was the better to do so .... I have noticed they are bickering and have had little fights already. Yet they seem as though they have bonded and are together all the time and copy each other .The breeder said they were from same clutch which I think they are , But I think he did know they were both hens tbh because they were the only 2 he had left that were ready to go and I said I wanted 2 males .

You will always get one bird dominant than the other (pecking order) but if they were together from youngsters and/or the same clutch you shouldn't have too many problems. Its nice that you have them young so you can train and watch them develop their little characters!

Well I just couldnt get my head around calling them Skye and Saffy it seems hard when you have settled on names then find out they are the opposite sex.. So I have come up with `Polly` for the blue one and `Jenny` for the yellow one lets hope this is third time lucky ;D
