hello all! i got my newest budgie Baby about a month ago. the day after we got him we noticed that he had a big bald patch under one of his wings and there was discharge coming from his vent. so we immediately packed him up and took him back to petsmart. they said they took Baby to the vet and everything was fine. his bald patch is gone and his vent has been clean ever since. weve had him back for about 2 weeks now, and we have had him in quarantine. so my questions are this: is it possible for budgies to get sick something like when we catch a cold and it goes away on its own, or are all of their illnesses serious? and is quarantine still necessary even tho its been about a month since he had the problem, and the vet said he checked out ok? hes currently still in quarantine because im nervous and dont want to take the chance of my other babies getting sick. any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks! hi jayjay... well first things first .... you say you have had him back about 2 weeks .... so theres at least 2 more weeks to keep him from the others ... plus yes they do get things wrong with them that goes away on its own ... but alot of things kills them fast aswell ... so isolation is vital when there ill .. this is why everyone should have a hospital cage ... just in case ...if you cant get one...... or you cant make one..... buy a heated propagator ... from say bnq... they work just aswell... and there cheep..... i hope trhis helps .... regards mick...

Hello, Good morning I agree with MickMay, Unfortunately quarantine is still necessary.. even though it's a pain and anticipation sometimes takes over. I would also say another 2 weeks should be vital, also because I know A LOT about PetsMart, and they firstly don't breed the birds themselves, they have NO IDEA where the birds came from, the birds aren't even given the proper diet, space to fly, or hygiene that is necessary for a healthy bird. I wanted to also get birds from there (just because the price) but the problems and trauma that SOMETIMES comes along with it, is just not worth it, and worth getting it from a trustworthy place. Also in regards to their illness, I wouldn't say that ALL are serious, but you have to think, they are tiny littttle bity cuteeeeee creatures lol their immune system isn't as strong as ours. There are ways to natural treat SOME illnesses, but you have to make sure it's not a serious illness that is underneath all the symptoms. I would suggest making sure the climate of the room the parakeet/s stay in to be the appropriate temperature, Clean cage, food, water, and proper diet.. Good luck, -Ash, Little Man, Baby Blue, and Baby Thumbelina <3

I agree totally with Mick's post - good work Mick! This is why you aren't allowed to leave. You are around on the forum when the rest of us aren't! May I add that quarantine is especially important if the bird has been back to the pet store. Those places are a haven for germs! If you have a serious issue, an avian vet is your best option.

An exotic animal vet would be better than a regular "cat/dog" vet, yes. I think so, anyway.

Bald patches under the wing are not uncomonnon and do not pose a problem, your bird has a classic case of stress due to moving into a new enviroment

Sounds like you have done everything right to make him healthy, I hope he soon settles and is fit as a fiddle, but like the other members have said quarantine is still vital! Please show us some pictures we can't get enough!!
