As some of you know I am going to be building an aviary in near future as I have got the budgie bug and there`s no cure ;D Well .. we have new neibours who moved in about 6weeks ago the are 3 youngsters renting the house .and have a cat and 8 pet rats ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) When they were moving in I warned them that I had 3 greyhounds and a whippet and if the cat came over the dogs would kill her as they are ex racers trained to chase small prey . They said the cat was an indoor cat and didnt go out much anyway but thats not the case the cat is out all the time and its jumping off thier kitchen roof onto ours and not only that its jumping up on my front window miowing because it cant get in its own house ![::)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/eyesroll.png) , its driving my dogs mental and mine jumped up to the window and broke the chains on the bottom of the blinds The dogs are running back and fo and can sense when the cat is out there I said to the owners last week can they maje sure the cat has a way it can get in when they not there because I dont want my dogskiling it the girl said she would but nothing has changed ![::)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/eyesroll.png) I am now worried that when we put up the aviary this cat is going to be coming in the garden more after the birds and my dogs will be even worse going for it ![::)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/eyesroll.png) . I have lived in this house for coming up 38 yrs and not had any problems in the past. Any suggestions of help would be great as I dont want to ditch my ideas of getting an aviary just because of this cat

Its privatly rented Mick .. I did say to the girl why dont they ask the landlord if they can fit a cat flap as that way the cat could get in . And she said they have to go through the letting agent so would ask them...... They were leaving the bathroom window open but its not open much now since the nights have gone colder ,so the cat is crying and looking for a place to get in .

My next door-but-one neighbour has two cats and this is something I had to consider before building my aviary. You need to make sure that the outside flight is double netted, this will help to protect the birds and also keep away birds of prey. My neighhbour is great about her cats though, she has told me many a time that if they come into our garden I can throw a cup of water over them or even blast them with the hosepipe ;D One of them, Billy, used to sit on the aviary roof but after a couple of soakings he now stays away ;D It helps I have three dogs too.

Julie - water is a good deterrant for cats. I had a problem with one and I used to fill an old, empty washing up liquid bottle and used to squirt the cat with water. It does no harm and I could virtually reach the cat even if it was 15 - 20 ft away. He he! It hardly comes back at all. I know this is probably just a temporary measure for you, but good luck. In my experience landlords really do not like tenants keeping cats or dogs as pets, so do ring the agent/landlord.

Can't agree more with everyone's advice. Water is a great deterrent, citronella is also good. Sprinkled around the boundaries - or wherever you see the bleeding thing.
This is someone else's suggestion for application: Add a couple of drops to used teabags and place around the garden for a completely natural and biodegradable solution that won’t harm or distress pets/animals or children. The oil will need to be re-applied every few days or after heavy rain. Hope this helps

i wouldnt worry about these things julie till you have spoken to the landlord today ...he/her may fit a cat flap but he/her may tell the tenants to get rid of the cat ...just see what he /she has to say ..it is HIS/HER PROBLEM NOT YOURS ...

I just rang Peter Allan estate agent and they checked thier agreement and a cat is allowed ..... the girl I spoke to said they are due for an inspection of the property on 3rd oct and she will mention the cat flap to them because she checked up and these youngsters havent been in touch about putting one in .

If your neighbours arn't allowed a cat flap maybe they could leave a small kennel near to the door and make it cozy for the cat. Our next door neighbour was renting and did this, the cat used it a lot. Cats dont like orange peel either but please don't hurt the cat in any way!! we have two cats nearly 18 and they don't bother with the budgies, cockatiel, parrot or 3 dogs so even if it came into your garden it might not bother with the birds once it was used to them. I think I am right in saying the law on cats is that they wonder by nature and there's not much you can do if they come in your garden. I hope you can sort it with your neighbour without falling out over it. Good luck with your aviary!! wish we had the room for one. P.S. Not all cats have flees!! I can honestly say that our cats and dogs don't have a flee between them. I NEVER use flee collars or repelents, just a little garlic in their food in warm weather. I also am a firm believer on home made food for them all, I think this helps keep flees and worms away.
