Can't begin to tell you how upset and distressed both Thala and I are. She is making little progress on road to recovery so I took forum advice to separate them and keep her warm. She went totally mental climbing frantically all over the cage, hopping from perch to perch and even climbing upside down like a bat on cage top and getting caught on the hot water bottle cover! I was crying more than she was. I have now let her out th cage because she was so adgitated I thought she'd die there and then from the stress! She doesn't even eat enough food at the moment for the energy she just used up with that and i feel I have done her more harm than good. She is still on anti b but difficult gettin her to take. Guardian angel is on its way. She is my first pet and budgie. Advice please

Advice please sorry to here this ... but can only say its important for her to have the heat ...... i would say to put her back in with the other budgie ... but still use the heat .. it will not hert the other budgie ... and as long as she is happy being in with the other one .. and it calms her down ..... it can only be a win win ... i have herd it said said many times its important for every one to have a hosptal cage ... but people dont think to get one till there bird is ill ... many times its to late then .... i hope she recovers and soon ...they do go down hill fast ... but will also recover fast as well.... or they recover slowly .... some times no mater what we do we cant save them all ... im very sorry to say ... i hope this helps .....

Bit of a catch 22 situation mick cos he goes mental with boredom shut in cage and starts to annoy her. We don't have a heat lamp. It have had heating on in conservatory which gets warm anyway. I'm just trying to calm down. Thanks for your advice. I know we can't save them all and I'm only to aware of that with the passing of other little budgies I'm trying my very best but am just so inexperienced. Trying to Pull myself together to go out on my bike for some escapism before round two!!

Not a good place to be, I can understand that. But if Thala has something contagious you are running the risk of having not one, but two, very sick birds. Did the vet not give you any advice regarding this? If not, then I would ring them and ask - is it okay for my sick bird which you suspect of having ? (what?) to be with my other bird, who I got at the same time (was that from the same place?). Replace her water with cold weak black tea (and a little honey added, for energy), or if she is still agitated, camomile tea is a great soother - good for birds as well as humans. Now if she got caught on the hot water bottle cover - what is the cover? I have used just the water bottle, a hand towel over it and then a sheet or two of newspaper over that so that any poop lands on the newspaper and is easily cleaned away. As Mick has said, sometimes you can do everything you can and still it is not enough. I sincerely hope Thala recovers and soon.

Hess you are up late tonight - day for us. Thank you. Vet said it ok for them to be together as they've been together all this time. She said it was possible he is resistant to bact and yeast but passed it to her during feeding. Put her med on seed but he eats it if I don't get there quickly enough so though take that stress away and keep her in cage. When she comes out all she does is sleep anyway. I changed cage back over to big cage ( having trouble getting them near little cage) and guess what they both flew in. Put hit water bottle back on top (where it was on small cage - didn't expect her to become bat!) they are both now sleeping under it in sunshine. Nobody told me having pets was so stressful

Put the hot water bottle on the bottom of the cage. Hot air rises. If you put it on top most of the heat will simply go upwards and be of no use to anyone. Also keep all but the front of the cage covered with a thick cloth (towel or multiple folds of fabric - an old sheet for instance) otherwise again, the heat dissipates very quickly, and the sick bird gets no benefit.

Firstly it is always best to separate any sick budgie but if she is that manic when separated then I think it is best that you leave them together. What is it the vet said is wrong with Thala? Is she just on antibiotics? The problem with putting the antibiotics on the seed or water is that Thala will not consume enough of it to benefit her. Budgies eat and drink very little every day. When one of my budgies, Lola, was extremely ill with an infection I gave her the antibiotics straight into the corner of her mouth twice a day for three weeks to nurse her back to health. If Thala isn't eating a lot then she won't be getting enough or any of the treatment. Did you vet show you how to give her the meds or just tell you to put it onto the food?
It is also very important to keep her warm. Warmth, calm, and meds are the best things for an ill budgie. Put a hot water bottle on the bottom of the cage and cover it with newspaper or a cloth that they won't get their nails stuck in. Also, as others have said, cover the cage on three sides to keep the warmth in. Thala needs rest and calm, she might not realise it but you need to be in charge and make sure she has what is best for her x

The syringe is very big for her little beck. Vet said yeast and bacteria overgrowth.

I'd suggest giving your vet a call and asking for advice on how to give her the treatment when she is sharing a cage, they should also be able to provide you with a smaller syringe and tell you what dosage to use. x

All calm on the western front - both been in cage all day with radiator heat being captured with cloth and blowing nice hot air into the cage. Hot water bottle on bottom ( albeit it's a tall cage ). Poor Khloro is clearly too hot and sitting with wings open but she's just dandy. She's eaten a bit more today and he's been good not annoying her thankfully at least when i've been around. Had to go out and get away from them for a bit.

My friend who used to work in a pet shop came over today and she said she was looking quite well. She has eaten a lot more today, is continuing to preen herself and i'm still keeping her all toasty. Why did you think she wouldn't make it Mick?
