hey everyone. i recently posted about my sweet lil boy Kiwi. he was diagnosed with a bacterial infection by a vet, not an avian vet because there are none anywhere near where we live. the vet gave us baytril to use for 7-10, along with quarantine and a heating pad. after the first dose, he seemed to be feeling better. we kept him in quarantine and continued his antibiotics for 10 days. after that, he seemed to be back to his usual playful self for almost a week. today after running a few errands, i got home and realized that he looked the same way he did the first time he was sick. i called the vet and the soonest i can get him in is monday, and i was told to start giving him the baytril again. the vet didnt run any tests, just kinda gave him a quick exam and said he had a bacterial infection. hes able to keep food and water down, but his right leg went lame for a bit and hes fluffed, and rocking back and forth when perched on my finger. i can tell my baby doesnt feel good at all, and im really concerned. im trying to figure out why the vet would want me to give Kiwi baytril again if it didnt fix the problem the first time. im confused and have no idea what to do. any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated. it clearly is megabacteria now called AGY , the vets provide Baytril which just feeds the disease , supplty plenty of japanese millet as this is easy to crack and put the bird on a course of nystatin ..................

AGY - Jayjay, stands for Avian Gastric Yeast. If that helps at all. You are very right to query why the vet would want to recommend, again, the drug that previously has done nothing to help. Unfortunately for you and Kiwi, baytril is a broad-spectrum antibiotic over-prescribed by vets who really don't have an answer. Unfortunately, if this is AGY, is seems to rear it's ugly head when your bird becomes stressed or compromised in some way. Which Kiwi has been, recently. If you can get hold of some nystatin by fair means or foul, do it, and I hope and wish you the very best of luck.
