Hi guys, Disco is only 6 months old but he is causing us some worries what with one thing or another bless him. I have been treating him with one spot Ivermectin for scaly face and he had his 2nd dose last Tuesday. There were no problems but then 4 days later, he has suddenly started being unable to put much weight on his left leg/foot. It is normal in colour and does not look any different to the other foot, and I have seen it flex slightly. He is eating and drinking and also still playing with his reflection in the mirror and letting me give him kisses and seems chirpy enough. He either has it lifted up and slightly out to the side or he has it laid flat on the perch, I have seen him put a little weight on it for short periods of time. I have moved his food and water etc within easy reach so he doesnt have to struggle to get to them. I am concerned that maybe the Ivermectin has affected him even though I only had 1 spot on my finger and applied it directly to him. Do I take him to the vets and also do I discontinue the Ivermectin until his leg gets better? He has just come out onto the top of the cage and seems to be getting about better on the bars than the perches! What to do for the best? Help please?

I agree with Mick - the ivermectin shouldn't be the issue, as long as it is 0.1%. This is the correct strength dosage for budgies. Hopefully he has just hurt it a little somehow and it will sort itself. But of course, yes, if it doesn't improve, get him to a vet.

There are 2 issues I have with the Ivermectin - he does not like being caught for us to administer it so he has to be "chased" around the cage which I am worried will aggravate his foot. Also he is on dose 2 of 3 of the Ivermectin, but I am not certain that I actually got some on him with dose 1 (I am certain the 2nd one went on as I put the drop on my finger to make sure some actually came out). There seems to have been a slight improvement after dose 2 but do I just give him dose 3 and presume he has had all 3? I dont want to overdose him. Its such a worry being a budgie Mum ;-)

Give him dose 3 and see. Moniter his progress and if he still seems to be infested, give the 4th. My feeling is that one drop extra over the period of time you are talking about is not going to be an over-dose. Especially as you seem certain he got very little of the first dose. You are using it as a treatment, not a preventive, so you should be okay with that.

Thank you all for your comments. I have booked Disco in at the vets on Monday because although his foot seems a little better I want to know if I am doing everything I can for him. (We lost our other budgie Bailey at 3 years old so Im not taking any chances even if Im probably being over-protective!) So regarding the Ivermectin Im going to take it with me and let the vet administer dose 3 while he examines him then he doesnt have to be upset twice! I will also get some advice from the vet regarding the scaly face. Will keep you all informed and thanks again
