Ohhh how lovely, im still catching up with things (after my hol ;D) so ive just found this thread. Ive often been tempted by love birds but have found them to be VERY loud when ive studied them in the shop, do you find them to be very noisy. So sorry about the loss of one little one . Im interested BB, were you sure yours were a pair when you got them and did you go by the visual signs that you describe, i understand that some finches are hard to sex as well. Thank you. Some people find them very loud. They are certainly louder than budgies but I don't think they are louder to an uncomfortable level. I enjoy their chirping a lot. Check the attached file. Nobody can be sure 100% without DNA test. We felt the pelvis bone and looked at the body size. We were sure about 75 - 25, but there is no DNA test available here so there was nothing else we could do. Experienced pet-shop owners can have very very close guesses here. Attachments:

Sorry you have lost one of your chicks, BB, but so much more sorry for the parent birds. It is horrible knowing what has happened and having to watch mum and dad bird calling looking, trying everything to find that lost little one. I hate seeing it in the wild birds ....... think I would be completely hopeless with my own.

I can't stand that either.

They are real cuties!! It's so amazing how different chicks look at that age from different small bird species.

When do you expect the last egg to hatch, BB? And where in the laying order was the one who died?

When do you expect the last egg to hatch, BB? And where in the laying order was the one who died? The last egg is the first one laid and doesn't look promising. I am just keeping it as it keeps the chicks warm when mom is out. The one died was third in order.
