Well, today had been the first day that I have been home most of the day to observe what the boys get up to. Funny five minutes doesn't come near it! Funny five minutes every ten minutes and feathers flying everywhere! Not much training done! They don't seem very interested, too keen to keep flying about. They ate loads of millet so I have taken it out now. Oscar is so cute and a lot smaller than Harvey so keeps dodging out of his way as he flies around. Really want to let them out of their cage - do you think it's too early being as they are not tame to me yet? Breeder said they would be easy to get back in the cage once it starts to get dark - what do you think guys??

Lovely boys, i cant see a problem with letting them out, as long as its all safe, let them have a mooch. They are very easy to catch when its dark, i just pick mine up, you just have to be sure not to frighten them too much. I just gently pick them up and place them where they are supposed to be and they don't have a digery doo whats just happened ;D, they are pretty useless in the dark. Ive always got mine used to stepping on to a spare perch and when its time for in i just hold it up to their feet and they step on and its job done . Good luck ;D.

I shall do this tomorrow. I have made sure everything is safe and I have a special tree (bit like a hat and coat stand!!!!) with dowling perches and a toy hung on. I have a spare piece of doweling to get them to step onto, so will let you know what happens. I am sure they need to come out and stretch their wings. Can't wait for tomorrow now!! ;D

Don't be surprised if they refuse to come out at first, give them time, if you open the door for a bit every day they will soon get the idea. Also once they have done it they will be waiting to do it every day . Oh and they may have the odd crash until they get used to their surroundings and make sure you close curtains or blinds because they do tend to fly towards and into the windows. Look forward to hearing how goes .

I always use my small bathroom for the first flights out. They can't go anywhere much, there is nothing to hurt them and makes things easy for getting them back into the cage.
To add to Skysmum's advice regarding windows and doors - if you have areas of glass with no coverings - curtains or the like - I blutak sheets of paper up on the glass. There is no need to cover the whole of the area, just break up the expanse so it doesn't look like they can fly on through. Then over the days as they adjust to the room start removing some paper so the expanses of glass get larger and larger until eventually you have your window back. Once they know the limits of the room, they will be fine.

I did read in another thread the suggestion that Hezz made about putting A4 sheets of paper up at the windows in various places, which I did (thank you Hezz). Harvey was doing his usual going absolutely ballistic and knocking poor Oscar off his perch and Oscar very nearly escaped from him through the open door but obviously found it a bit too scary! I shall try again tomorrow. ;D I have only had them a week now so it may be a bit too soon, I will try again tomorrow tho. Thanks for all your advice.

It takes time but they will, its all a bit scarey and new. I used to leave the room and let them have a think ;D very often when i came back they were out. They usually spend most of the time pottering on top of the cage anyway .

Bit disappointed - Oscar was the only one to come out one day out of three. He sort of fell out with Harvey flying to and fro in the cage and knocking him about. It was a bit of a shock for Oscar, but he did everso well. He was relieved I think to get out of Harvey's way. Picked him up a couple of times when he got in a mess - he sat on my finger and was really keen to sit on a piece of dowling a couple of times to be put in a safer place. No probs putting him back either. Harvey is a bit of a bully in the cage, but a real chicken when it comes to venturing out. Never mind, I shall persevere!! I have a pic of Oscar on his coat stand!! so will try and post it on here.

Oscar will be dying to come out all the time now - if only to get away from Harvey! ;D
What does Harvey do when you try to bring him out of the cage?
