Hi everyone I have been letting Ernest out for a couple of hours to have a good fly I leave the cage open and he comes out he can fly that not the prob but cause he can't get the height spends a lot of time trying to get of the floor. I have put a playground on top but he does not stay on and bumps in to everything and falls on the floor. I live in a Victorian house tall ceilings and we have nothing at budgie high up to land on he get really tired and I can hear him breathing and panicking. Winnie can fly up v high and lands but she is small and not a show type. What shall I do about this as he really drops an falls and I think he will hurt himself. He is tHe same in his cage e climbs every where and flies very little he is not ill just heavy lol We have also tried some dowel aroun the room but he flies around it or at walls lol

Denying him flying time wouldn't be wise. Perhaps you can use a small room or a store etc. Or put something like a coat hanger to land on.

I don't have any smaller areas that he can fly in he just crash lands all the time smacks into the walls and can't get good hight he does not fly much in his cage he prefers to climb on the bars. I will my not just keep him in just needed safer solution. Like I said we tried perches around the room but he seems to fly around them

When Atilla was having trouble flying (well, she could fly fine but would lose height quickly) I started putting cushions & soft things around the base of furniture. I also made sure she could get around by only having to make small jumps or climbing across a ladder. I also put a spare cage side on the floor up to their cage so if she landed on the floor she could make her own way up the bars to the cage (though she used my hand more often than not.....)
Maybe Ernest just needs more time to get used to the room. Atilla used to have trouble turning. If Ernest uses the same flight path then perhaps you could either pad that area or put something there to distract him so he flies to a safer place?
Will he fly to you? You could stand at the end of the room where he crashes & get him to land on your arm? Atilla sometimes lost confidence so needed to be encouraged. I hope Ernest carries on with his flying & manages to master it.
BTW, he might not be landing on the perches as he needs a wider landing spot?
