so i have some pairs in cages still no interest in breeding yet one pair are preening each other so about how long before i abandon the experiment please

how long have you had them together brian???. Personally i would give them a month, if there's no action by then, I would re pair. Preening (in my experience) ,is usually the first sign. then feeding then, ehhhh?? well you know ;D

I assume you have nest boxes in situ with a big handful of shavings inside, if yes and the shavings have been disturbed , then someone is interested

yep guys have boxes and shavings one pair are a bonded pair that have bred previously i had them paired a few weeks back and they had been interested in the shavings so ill wait and see cheers for replies oh and its only been a week ;D

a pair in breeding condition would normally lay between 8 and 14 days

I have an issue quite smiliar to this. I always put a pair in a cage for about 15 days with a nest box and normally they pair up, and after 15 days then I put them in main avairy/big cage. It has been quite sometime that i am not successful to pair my birds, even if I leave them for 21 days, they do not get interested in each other. I am unlucky with greys specially, I have not been able to pair even one grey brid, alghough I have 3 grey males.

It always works out better if you let them choose. It's speeds the whole thing up and you even tend to get better results. Just my view.......
