I'm sure I've seen a list somewhere of useful things to keep in stock, just in case a budgie gets ill, but blowed if I can find it, and all I can think of at the moment is camomile tea.
Any suggestions of other items - or where to find the list I think I've seen! ;D - extremely welcome!

Thanks, Hezz, but I found that one! What I was actually looking for was more actually mediciny things, like camomile. Perhaps that's the only thing you CAN really keep in stock in case of emergency!

Not sure which thread you mean. But off the top of my head :
- an emergency energy source - like 'Guardian Angel' to provide as soon as you notice your bird is unwell, possibly buying you more time to get the bird to the vet for proper diagnosis. I use a product called Quick Gel as GA isn't available in Oz.
- Camomile tea - a bowel stimulant with slight anti-bacterial properties.
- Black tea and Golden Eye Ointment - for eye complaints
- Styptic powder - for sudden bleeding
- Baytril - for certain bacterial infections. Baytril will last if stored properly in the fridge for (I think) 18 months/2 years. Most other meds only have a shelf life of a few weeks, so you can't stock them.

To add, I would mention vaseline petroleum jelly, and savlon in either powder or cream form - it is safe for budgies; I don't know what the shelf-life of ivermectin is, and you guys seem to be able to get hold of it relatively easily. At least with mites you aren't in a do or die situation. For bleeds, cornflour or a cake of soap are also very good, and usually already in the house, .... whichever depending on where the bleed is. Camomile tea is also a soother, a calming tea, and black tea (weak of course) can also calm the digestive system. Manuka honey is supposed to be good for things like ulcers and cysts, burns - in fact most open wounds - but not sure if you would be willing to go that far. Some people swear by it; others say no proven difference.

Just in case anyone's interested, I've found the list I thought I saw (it was on a different forum): see talkbudgies.com/showthread.php?t=73598. I don't think I'll be stocking in on ALL those items but useful to know where to look!

When my mothers dog was on its last legs and WOULD NOT stop biting her leg to the point where it was a horrible open wound the only thing that worked was manuka honey. It was amazing.

When I was a kid, our dog wouldn't stop gnawing her paws. We took her to the vet, who was a locum as the proper one was on holiday, and he said she was bored - we should get her watching television with us! Then the real vet came back from holiay and said, harvest mite!

Well done tracking down that list, Rose. Some vets, hey!? Good to hear of a true experience, Donna, regarding the manuka honey. I have heard anecdotal stories passed through many people and therefore you do wonder how changed the story is from the original.
