Hi everyone, recently noticed Kiiro has been getting some kind of crust on her beak, it seems to be getting a bit worse. I did a search on Google and it looks like it could either be normal as hens beaks flake? Or it might be mites. Can anyone tell from this picture whether she needs a visit to the vets on Monday? If it is mites, can you treat all your birds at the same time? None of the others are showing signs. Apart from that she's normal, healthy appetite, very lively and vocal and doesn't seem to be in any kind of distress. Thanks.

Luke, I am no expert, but to me her beak does not seem normal. Hens ceres flake, yes, but I have not seen a beak like that. Can you see any tunnelling which would be an indicator of mites? It is a beautifully clear photo, and sometimes beaks do flake, I realise - in which case a rub over with an edible oil (olive?) can help. I really can't help much as I haven't any experience with this.....sorry.

If it does turn out to be scaly mites, the avian vet's prescription is required and over the counter medicine may not work. You will notice considerable improvements after just a few days dosage but don't stop and complete the entire treatment process otherwise it will quickly return.
You will have to treat all other birds at the same time as it spreads to other birds as well.

Thanks I'll make an appointment with the vet on Monday morning, it's not an avian vet but hopefully they'll be able to help. I searched from Scaly face mites on google and one of the answers was from a Barrie S.. wonder if it's this forums Barrie Obviously a vet trip is a priority to confirm if it is indeed scaly face mites, but it's good to know if it is there's a cheaper solution.

A topical application of ivermectin also kills the mites.
Try this before going to vet, also because it looks in early stage.

Thanks.
I've just saw you can buy ivermectin online? Will this stuff be sufficient? If the vet confirms the mites then It'll probably be a whole lot cheaper buying it online than it would be to get it directly from the vet.
If it's not the same stuff then obviously I'll go with the vet prescribed version.

Luke, it's ivermectin 0.1% that is used for birds.
You need to treat all your birds, as it's contagious.

Monty had this when we first got him, I'd say it does look like scaly face mites. I treated him with ivermectin, at the time and also put vaseline on his beak and his legs and feet (his legs were a little crusty too) He made a full recovery.
Stace is right you need to treat all of your birds.

it's not an avian vet but hopefully they'll be able to help. I just noticed this, no need to go to a general vet. Try yourself first.

Thanks to everyone for their advice.
I've ordered some ivermectin 0.1% and I'll follow the treatment and tips from here before consulting my vet.
This is why I like this forum so much, so helpful and an invaluable source of information, thanks guys, appreciate it.

Johnsons make a scalyface lotion, its available from most petshops and is very efective if used as directed, but make sure you treat ALL birds with ivermicetin, and isolate the one thats infected.

Thanks Ian, I've seen some of that in my local pet shop so I'll pick some up. Can that be used with the treatment of ivermectin on the effected bird?
I've been reading up on the administration of the ivermectin and I've got to admit it has me worried! Seems like it's a risky dosage and needs to be done to an exact drop.
Do you drop it onto the back of the neck on the feathers or do you ruffle the feather up and drop it directly on the skin?
Also I have a Cockatiel in the other room, will I have to treat that? I've searched Google high and low for a Cockatiel dosage of Ivermectin and I can't even find confirmation that they suffer from Scaly face mite, does anyone know anything about this here?
Thanks again.

Definitely looks like scaley mites to me. Scaley mites is an fairly easy thing to treat. You need to apply the ivermectin 0.1% as is instructed on the box. It will then need repeating a week later and again a week after that. As well as treating Kiiro you need to treat any other budgies you have as they are all likely to have mites. You also need to scrub all of the cage including perches, bowls and especially the perches as this is where the mites will live. You should repeat this after each treatment, more often if you want to be extra sure, cage cleanliness is very important when it comes to getting rid of those horrible mites. There is a thread on the forum about mites I believe, it will be worthwhile reading it. Don't bother with the Johnsons scaley face lotion, especially as you will be using the Ivermectin, nothing will get rid of of mites better than the Ivermectin. Also do as Marianne advised and pick up some ordinary vaseline and apply it to Kiiros' feet, legs, cere, and beak Let us know how you get on.
