Hi All, I rescued this young lad yesterday, he was on the floor at our local football club. I wasn't sure what to do with him so after a trip to the local garden centre, a new cage was purchased and it looks like I've got a new pet!! He does seem very quiet though and is sitting still a lot, with his feathers a little puffed up. He has eaten yesterday, but has not taken any water as yet. As I'm a complete newbie to keeping a bird, I wondered if the more experienced of you was able to assess his health from the above info and photo and offer me any advice. Is he healthy? Do I need to take him to the vet, or will he come around after a couple of days recovering from his obviously traumatic experience? Any help, much appreciated. dl.dropbox.com/u/101707736/photo.JPG

This young lad seems to me to be hale and healthy. Seeing as you don't know what has happened for him to be out in the wicked wild world, it isn't surprising that he is quiet and subdued. Not to be worried about seeing him drink either. Drinking seems to be a rather hazardous task, if you are a wild budgie, unless you have someone to watch your back, and these guys instincts still tell them that that is what they are. Most probably for the time being, he will wait until you either aren't in the room, or aren't watching before he will drink. If you see him drink, you know he is feeling safe enough for the time being. Some budgies, moving from their aviary/home/nest can take up to two weeks to settle in to a new environment - most don't - but this may give you some indication that a few days of stillness is not unexpected. Good for you, on rescuing your new friend.

Very nice baby hen there Judging from the photo, she looks perfectly healthy. As Hezz said, she'll likely settle in in a few days once she's gotten used to her surroundings ;D

Thanks for the welcome and comments all, much appreciated. As for a name, I was calling him Ted....as in uninviTED, unexpecTED.....but now He is a She, it'll have to be Teddie :-)
She has perked up during the day today and I've had her sitting on my finger (inside the cage) chirping away. She's also not bothered by my 3 German Shepherds...so far the perfect little girl.

Hi again, Just a few pointers for a newbie.
If you have any questions, ask on here rather than a pet shop. Pet shops rarely know much about birds and will often give you the wrong advice. Sad but true. No question is too dumb. We've all been there.
Single birds only eat about a dessertspoon of seed a day, probably less. Either change it daily, or if you provide more, blow the husks off each day and freshen up. Seed bowls look full when they are not, as the bird leaves the husks behind dehusking as they eat it. Trill budgie seed is a good one, as it's got extra minerals and vitamins in it.
It's really important that their water is fresh and clean from contamination. Change it at least daily. Also place their water where they can't easily poop in it when they are on their perch.
Don't buy or get anything with sandpaper on it - perches or cage liners. Pet shops sell it, but it's really bad for their feet. Natural wood perches are best, when you get time to sort that out later.
Get a cuttlebone and an iodine block/bell and attach to the side of the cage. They provide essential calcium and iodine. They'll nibble on it when and if they need it.
Teddie is gorgeous and well done to you for saving her.

Ooooo, yes, definitely a girl. Now I am looking in the true light of day, and not the deep dark depths of the dungeon, where the computer normally lives.

She is a little fluffed up but despite that she looks healthy considering the status of the beak, cere and feet. Have a happy time together
