Hi
My budgie started showing signs of illness on Friday. She is a female called gypsy. I came home from work and she was puffed up at the bottom of the cage (which she has never done before). On Saturday she was up on her perch but very puffed up, I looked up a local vet that said they specialised in avian and we went in that afternoon. The woman didn't seem to know anything about birds, she left the room and came back wearing a huge glove (similar to a falcon glove) and shoved it in the cage trying to catch her. I don't know who was most scared, the vet or the bird! I ended up getting her out myself and she listened to her chest and said she was wheezy and gave us some antibiotics to take home to put in her water.
I have been doing this but I'm not sure if she is drinking (I have never seen her drink in 4 years...). I have covered her sandpaper with kitchen roll as she has been pecking it and bought her a bed to keep her warm (a bit like a hand muff that clips into her cage). She rarely comes out of this now. She has never liked being handled (I know I should have worked harder at this now) so I don't want to force feed her antibiotics).
I have come home tonight and I can't get her out of bed at all. She has been eating fine.
Any advice would be greatly received. I know she is really ill, I just don't know what more I can do for her. My last budgie died of egg binding but vet said this is very unlikely as she has never laid before.
Sorry for long winded message.
