I've not had much luck with breeding albinos and lutinos over the years. It appears that they are not the motherly type. I have a lutino at the moment that was born in my aviary and not the product of inbreeding. It took a year before she discovered she was a female and started to chuck eggs out of the other 2 birds' nest boxes. I was ready to send her to the bird shop, when she finally discovered her own nest box (there were 2 spare ones) and laid 4 eggs. I noticed she did not sit on them a lot, although she was protective. The eggs have now vanished. A couple have been pushed out of the box (by her??) the other 2 appear to have been eaten (bits of yolk in the box and no shell left, in spite of access to cuddle bone and crushed chook eggshells as well as a weekly boiled egg). Is my observation right and are albinos / lutinos problematic mothers? Any suggestions besides the bird shop? Thanks!

i found show type Albinos and lutinos hard to breed ...... and i did have one hen ...... that was a egg eater .... ... so i got rid of her as a pet..... once they start eating there eggs..... there no good for breeding ... . but having said that ... i did have some good sucksess with breeding Albinos and lutinos... . but i dont agree with colany breeding...... theres lots more problems and danger for the birds.... the eggs and the chicks... . but if it works for you thats ok ... i did do colany breeding once .... and didnt have many problems .... but once i went over to cage breeding ..... i had lots of chicks all healthy..... and it was much easyer to look after them .. . but this is just what worked for me every one has there own way ... heres just some of my Albinos and lutinos.... .

I love your picture! Beautiful birds. I appreciate your success with albino breeding, but it may be a while before I'm brave enough to try again. Regrettably this bird will have to go, a real shame as she is the only lutino born in my aviaries and I'm rather fond of her. Thanks for the reply.

That's an idea, I'll think it over. About the picture, I've tried to download pictures of my birds on this forum before, quite unsuccessfully. I think my camera makes pictures that take too much memory space / high resolution. I have not figured out how to do this (I'm no computer genius), but since you are asking I will ask my computer savvy friend for help. Then I have to decide how to make a picture of the "setup" which is home made, rather large and include corners. Never mind, I'm always up for a challenge!

I made pictures and tried to post them without much success. I will try again when my computer friend visits. On another note, I noticed that Lutino laid another egg, perhaps she got rid of the earlier eggs as she was ready to produce more? I moved this egg to another nest, hoping another mother will do a better job. If she lays more I will leave the new eggs for her to sit on. Maybe she will slowly learn how to be a mother??? There is me hoping!

The aviary on the left and the covered area in a corner and the aviary on the right. The baby that flew out this week.

I'm getting quite the hang of this! As you may be able to spot the left aviary has 4 nest boxes, the one on the right three. The aviaries also house a pair of diamond doves and chinese button quails, and one finch that was caught by the cat, cannot fly and has become a master at hang gliding!

There sounds like there is a story to "The baby that flew out this week." The last couple of photos show some healthy and seemingly happy budgies.

Not sure whether that sentence is double Dutch (English is my second language); the baby that flew out flew out of the nest box and as far as I know is happy and healthy! There are 3 babies still in the nest, one of them identical to the one on the picture. Time for a third aviary??? Yeah right! ;D
