Just like all (or most) birds, Munchy really enjoys his time out of the cage. I think I might have accidentally encouraged whistling for attention as, when he was younger, if he whistled when I wasn't in the room and sounded like he was calling, I would whistle back so that he knew I was still around. So now he tends to whistle to us constantly when he wants to come out of his cage. He can always come out when we're at home but he does tend to do it five minutes before we need to leave to catch the bus, and then goes a little bit nuts climbing around the cage and doing a very good job of making us feel guilty. Sadly we can't let him out when we're not there as the house is alarmed, and he'd most likely just sit around because we're not there anyway...
Anyway, as soon as we come home (usually my grandparents before me as I'm often at uni) he starts calling to us. It's become a game with my nan now. She keeps trying to sneak into the house without him noticing. He must have very good ears because he starts whistling as soon as she puts the key in the lock. ;D Gotta love him, he's brilliant. He runs up to the door and keeps leaning forwards as my nan tries to open the cage, which makes her a little nervous and she has difficulty opening the cage anyway. I managed to convince him to run to the other side of the cage a few times when I was opening the door (Even I get a bit nervous as Munchy does tend to nip at fingers that come close to him in his cage and leaning forwards tends to put his beak right next to the clip for the door...).
Sometimes when he comes out he shoots straight off into the living room. Occasionally when I let/coax (depending on how eager he is to come out) him out he'll climb onto the top of the cage and just stand there looking at me. I'll stand up and he'll follow me to the end of the cage, and then I walk away towards the door and look over my shoulder and say 'Come on, then' and he takes off and flies past me towards the living room.
Bless him. He's so adorable. He sometimes goes crazy and starts bobbing his head around like a mad thing. If he gets a downy white feather stuck to his beak he goes mental, trying to flick it off. Sometimes I get a millet bud if it happens when he's in his cage and use it to wipe the feather off of him. I've also just discovered a way to give him 'scratches'. He doesn't like fingers near him much, and I think noses tend to shove him a bit as he moves away from them when you try to rub his feathers the wrong way, but he happily gives nibbles. However, today I've managed to brush his mask feathers the wrong way using the face of his weeble budgie. He even tilted his head slightly and began closing his eyes slowly. Then when he doesn't want any more he just moves or nibbles at the weeble. It feels great being able to do that, even if he won't accept it from me directly.
Also, what's the minimum cage size requirement for two budgies? I don't think I'll ever be allowed a second until I move out but I can dream XD I'd like to take a look at some of the cages, at least.
