I don't know if there's a thread about this already - please point me to it, if there is - but I was wondering what people think is a reasonable weight for a pet budgie. I've just heard back from the avian vet who saw them on Friday and Ian and Marshall weigh in at 53g and 50g respectively ... They are now on Boot Camp (see budgerigarsforum.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=talk&action=display&thread=4543 thread) and I doubt they'll ever get weighed again unless they have to go back to the vet because getting them to stand on scales would terrify them to death!

AT that weight they are at the very high end of pet budgie weights. Mine weighs between 38 to 42 grams.

Oh dear! Let's hope the Boot Camp slims them up. They don't LOOK enormous ... Well, Marshie doesn't: just a little slip of a bird really ...

Hi Buy a cheap little kitchen scale from your Supermarket & glue a small perch on the top. You should have no trouble weighing your birds daily. If your birds have no difficulty flying then they are not over weight.....B.J.

^ Not strictly true, Charlie is overweight but has no difficulty flying. He's 56g and has a fatty lipoma on his stomach and liver problems.

They would take one look at it and run away as fast as they do from a piece of chard!

Great thread stace - do you know how much should the exhibition birds weigh in at? As ours are larger birds I believe the average weight for an exhibition bird is around 55g, with a range of around 50 to 60g. Some of them can be even heavier though as a few are really big (and i don't mean fat, but big). I remember someone on the Australian budgie forum saying a huge bird could be as much as 150g!

A friend of mine was telling me about the time he had a cockatoo sat on his shoulder. He said the surprising thing was the weight of it. To get the point across he said to imagine having a frozen chicken on your shoulder, it was that kind of heavy.
