My vet weighed Pepito's travel cage without him in it, then weighed the cage with him inside it and subtracted the weight of the cage from the total to get his weight - about 38g I seem to remember. I managed to weigh him at home with the postal scales I borrowed from my work by putting millet on the scale - he went to eat millet and I quickly noted how much he weighed minus the weight of the millet and got a similar result! It's not an always an easy thing to do though and would probably be worth getting their weight checked by the vet again in a few months time if you are concerned.

Thats a clever idea Ruth - great if you have a set of electronic scales too I might have to try that one!

I do the same, Ruth. Put down a piece of millet, re-tare the scales, and then persistently try to get birdies onto them. Sometimes it is quick, sometimes takes a while.

Great ideas for weighing recalcitrant budgies! And particularly good idea, Ruth, to borrow the postal scales from work!

Ada im allways trying to keep weight off of her and eagle im trying to get weight on him. If only ada would feed him im sure that would help both lol. Ada is currently 53g and eagle is 27g. Id like ada to be in the 40s and eagle to reach and stay at 30. Ada at her heavest was 65g! she lost a tiny bit after i cut out the treat seed sticks and every other day got them out on the bath room floor with lots of toys and an hour. But she lost loads when she wall ill and has put some back on.

Yes, I think looks can be deceptive! I thought Ian was a LITTLE podgy (well, he's big-boned), but Marshie seems such a little slip of a thing ... And yet there's only 3gm between them!

I think Boo gotten a bit podgy of late as well. Not sure. He does feel rather 'heavy' on my finger! Not quite frozen chicken heavy, but definitely an icy popsicle.
Since he got sick many months back, I've been feeding him all sorts of extras to try to get him back into full health. I'll whip the scales out too, and see if the scales tell me a different story.

Munchy's good with the scales, although I need to get some electric ones. Granddad made him a perch stand thing back along when I was trying to teach him to step up and not bite and I can put those on the scales and just pop Munchy on the stand. He's good at staying there long enough for me to read the weight, especially if I do it in the bathroom. Can't do it out the kitchen because he's always out of there like a shot.
