Brand New Budgie

We are quite new to keeping budgies and have about a dozen in an indoor aviary. They have been absolutely fine all summer but in the last week I have noticed a couple looking a bit ruffled although eating and drinking well. This morning I found one had died overnight which came as a surprise as there were no signs of loose droppings or anything to indicate to was seriously ill. Now i see another one is sitting ruffled and I handled him and found he is quite underweight. Now I am thinking I will have to go to the vets but wondered if I am missing something obvious. There were no signs of any parasites on the one that died and the plummage on the others looks great. Is it too cold for them as I have seen some shivering slightly and wonder whether we need to provide some heating for them? Supposing they have picked up some kind of bacterial infection what is the anti biotic of choice for budgies? I keep Baytril in for all my other small animals but have never had to treat a poorly budgie before. Any advice before we go off to the vets would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Before you go dosing your birds You should find out what the bird died of... Heat.... A greenhouse tube heater should be enough to keep the room warm, It's draughts that you have to worry about....B.J.

The shivering is likely part of their illness. I have 2 outside aviaries and in winter it may freeze mildly during the night. The birds can get under cover and out of the wind, and are fine in this weather. Sorry to hear your birds are unwell. Hopefully someone will give some sensible advise.
