Length or width ? And no its not what you think ;D
We were going to build the flight straight across the front of the shed but it would have only been about 4ft long x 6ft wide because I want to have space for our seat to sit out there in the summer because thats the part we use for sitting out. And if we built a type of safety porch to go into it it wouldnt leave much room , so plan B is to make it half the width of the shed but bring it up longer to about 7ft but it would be narrower but then I can put the seat and the flower pots opposite . So would it be ok if it was narrower as I thought it gives them more chance to fly

HI Have you thought of making it big enough so you can sit in it & enjoy your birds without wire netting between you?...B.J.

Hi Sorry didn't answer the question you asked. Birds seem to prefer length wise long flights. When wanting to go front to back they hop along the perches They like to keep nearer to the solid side of the flight. By adding depth, the cost far outweigh's any value to the birds....B.J.

julie.... could you post a pic of your set up .... as i forget the lay out .. im just thinking mabe you could put the flight.... 3 feet wide ....... and the full length of the aviary .. . but so you dont loose flying room .... mabe put the safety porch around one side of the aviary making it longer than the aviary... so thats your way in.... without compromising the flight space.. .

No room to do it that way Mick because there is a small wall to the right and then the next part of the garden is lower down because we live on a hill Where the shed is we built that section up a few years ago as it used to be a kennel and dog paddock but when we took paddock down we slabbed it and made into a patio area.. really speaking I could do with winning the lottery and moving b****dy house ;D

Hi If you put the porch inside instead of outside the flight, or enter from the shed....that would save flight space. I never used one myself. I always considered them a waste of space...See below....
MR FLUFFY
Safety porches, but how many birds have been lost over the years ? It must be hundreds. The problem is usually of our own making. We want our birds to like us & when they do, they try to follow us as we leave the aviary. Many bird keepers have stories of how they almost, or did lose birds because they had flown into the safety porch unseen by the owner. I personally preferred enter the flight, from the bird room. On a couple of occasions I have built an extra aviary onto an exiting shed. The design of which meant I had to fit an outside door to the flight. No safety porch for me. I learned long ago that the control of animals, was best effected with the aid. What Alfred Hitchcock referred to as a Maggovan. A prop around which the story revolves. Like the Shepherds Crook, or a Walking Stick.
For me it was Mr Fluffy. (he was a pink feather duster). Fluffy was the bad guy. When he's in the aviary he tolerates no-one in his air space. Which is from the entrance door to the nearest perch.
HOW IT'S DONE.
With Fluffy in hand I enter the aviary and stand by the the door slowly moving Fluffy about. As if he is a predator eyeing up the flock. Not a like a raving lunatic. I show no reaction myself, the birds should all be on the alert and wary. I act normally, talking as usual to the birds as I move so I'm a little nearer to them. Fluffy stays at arms length near the door patrolling his own area Should any bird approach it is repelled by a feint attack from Fluffy. Again I do not react, so the birds make no connection between Fluffy & myself. Once the birds learn, that when Fluffy is about, they are quite safe at the other end of the aviary.. Now on entering the flight I hold Fluffy behind me. at shoulder height the birds see Fluffy enter behind me & retreat to the far end. I can hang Fluffy near the door & do what I have to do & exit taking him out with me. The birds will quickly learn, but don't get too impatient & leave Fluffy by the door before your bravest bird has learned not to get too close. Better the loss of a birds dignity, than the loss of a bird.
PS Its easier to demonstrate than explain. We all know how the birds demeanour changes when we enter the aviary with a net. It's the same idea but without the panic..... Yours B. J.
