Hello, I was going to get a bird very soon, when I suddenly thought of something: we're doing work in our bathroom (putting up drywall, etc.) and there's a lot of plaster dust floating around in that area. We sweep it up, but there's always more. The bathroom is on the same floor as my bedroom (they're separated by a hallway) and I'd be keeping the bird in my room. Is plaster dust toxic to birds? Will it be okay as long as I keep the door closed and frequently air out my room? Thank you.

Wait until you've plastered and painted the bathroom, and then get your new bird. Better safe than sorry. Their lungs (air sacs) are much more sensitive than ours, and they are very tiny. Fumes and dust are all potentially toxic.

I'd wait until it's all done. Like you say there is always more dust and a bird will be affected by it even when you can't tell it's there. It's hard to be patient I know but it would be much better for the budgie.

Hi Remember it's not only the plaster dust. Some paints can be just as bad...B.J.
